We're going to Vail for Christmas and New Year.

What are the conditions usally like at that time of the year?
Any tips, hidden gems?
What are the best places go when we want to avoid the crowds (within a 2 hour drive of Vail)?

Went down there in March last year. Some nearby areas.

Brekenridge: Great village, good groomers, limited steeps. Probably best for families.

Keystone: Not too impressed. Pretty good park, moguls and groomers though.

Vail: Epic back bowls, and thats just the begining. Tons of cliffs and any kind of skiing imaginable. A few more steep runs would be nice though.

Copper Mtn: Pretty good, nice alpine terrain on the backside and good groomers on the front.

Arapahoe Basin: Much smaller than the other places, and a great place to aviod the crowds. Its steeper, with quite a few more expert-advanced runs than other places, but still a few groomers. Very high (base altitude of 10 000 feet!). If you want more extreme skiing, this is your hidden gem.

Loveland: Didn't go, but sounds like another quiter place to go when busy.

My favorites:
1. Arapahoe Basin
2. Vail
3. Copper Mtn.

There are some deals avalable if you look around on the internet for lift tickets, etc. The prices at the larger resorts can be around $70US a day, but apparantly there are places that they can be bought cheeper.

Taynton14: Thanks mate. This is useful information.
Will check out Arapahoe Basin. Sounds a bit like Kickinghorse.

if you are in vail, then head straight to Steamboat baby. otherwise- head on over to the
A-basin/key/brek/loveland area and hike Berthoud's Pass and Loveland pass for the good stuff. the resorts are not bad either.

As for conditions, Colorado is ruling everywhere right now. More snow than you can believe.

I have lived and skiied in winter park for a very long time. From what i have noticed is Vail is awesome place to go expecially blue sky and you have to hit up there bowls. My favorite places to ski are steamboat and winter park. From my experiances everywere is gona be crowded that time of year. IF you really want to avoid teh crowds go skiing on christmas, i do it every year there is great snow and nobody on the mountain. IF you want to do any backcountry post me back and i can help you out with some hidden places to hit go

hi!

I am going to Vail in February (17.2.-3.3.). I am looking for some company for riding.

I live in Slovenia (Evrope) and i usually ride in our mountains, but this year all Evrope is without snow so i decided to come to Colorado

What are the conditions usally like at that time of the year? How far away from Vail is this Arapahoe Basin?
What about heli skiing. Where is the best place to go (price is important-low butjet:) )

Thanks
