Where can I camp/ski in CO?
Mon, 2006-09-25 17:17
Hello, my name is Alec, I’m new to the forum but visit Biglines on a daily basis as a study break! Question: I need to organize a quick backcountry ski trip for myself. I’m staying in Denver with a friend Oct 19-23 and thought I’d head off to the mountains for a couple of days. Know any easy access spots close to Denver? I will most likely be using public transportation. I’d be content with skinning/hiking and skiing a random couloir. If its white, I can ski.

I'm not sure the resorts will be open during those dates. Winter Park/Mary Jane opens November 15. But if you had your own transportation you could head to Berthoud Pass and hike that and possibly ski a little. However, that could be rocky for you still. As for public transportation that is a tough question. Check out the resorts websites to see what they have for transportation to the areas.

ski/camp near Denver?
thanks. unfortunately, i was refering to doing backcountry, not resort skiing. i'm interested in an easy to get to spot where i can hike up and ski down, maybe camp the night and ski a 2nd day. are resorts chill in CO about letting people ski their terrain when they are not open? some places i've been to are "no go".

Berthoud Pass is the easiest backcountry to do and will have some snow but could still be rather thin at the dates you are here. Couldn't give you an answer in regards to the resorts, but suspect it will be a big fat no because of liability reasons.

Hey Alec, Like Iron Horse said, Berthoud Pass is a no brainer. Easy access, good camping options, and always people to hook up with. Cameron Pass is farther away but may be another option for you, depending on snow conditions. We got some decent turns a couple weeks on Cameron, after a 20" september dump. These pics were taken over the September 23-24 weekend:
Here' s a link to a few more pics from the last couple of weekends up there: http://www.powderbuzz.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=25

Nice pictures there bgardel. Another note is they are expecting a foot to fall today with some snow in the city, but shouldn't stick to the roads because of the warm soil temps. Let us know how things go for your adventure. |
