Great list. One addition for me: I NEED coffee in the morning, so I pack some instant or caffeine pills in my'first aid' kit. If I'm stuck out for the night, I figure I'll need to be on the ball come morning. I'd be non-functional without it. No need to heat, just mix with water or eat.

That's why it was a question. Those that do are asking for it!

You should throw in a roll of TP inside a ziploc bag...not that you can't use snow instead, that is one way to wake up without caffiene in the morning... :)

I have zipties in my gear kit and find that a roll of duct tape is a bit much to carry. What I do is wrap a couple mini rolls just below my pole grips. I barely notice the weight, always have it when I need it (even when skiing on the resort and need a quick fix for something) and it actually improves the swing of the pole as it makes it seem like there is less weight down low.

I wrap mine around my water bottle...same idea though...and it always comes in handy.

Since it seems like I'm the one in my group that comes prepared this is my normal load:

28L MEC pack
BCA 240cm probe
Shovel
2L water bladder
Food (enough for an over night)
duct tape
matches
bailing wire
Swiss army knife (switching to Leatherman this year)
mini SAS survival book
first aid kit
two zip lock baggies
tin foil
flask
spare gloves
spare socks
spare bandana
toque (I normally wear a helmet)
wind stopper fleece vest
Digi cam with spare batteries
and a beacon strapped to me

to be added
Skins
snow study kit
snow saw
... guess it's time for a new pack

Anyone know who sells Black Diamond ski pack in Cow Town?

I just bought a Black Diamond pack from MEC.

It is sexy and fairly big too

It is a predator 50l and I love it

it is also set up for mountaineering and it stays in lace when you ski

Thankfully I haven't had to use these but I thought I was the only one carrying zipties  I poached a few that the resorts hand out with lift tickets - fairly strong and in a couple of lengths.

I was worried there- a few posts without lighters mentioned.

I'm mostly sledding in the backcountry so I take a few more items but the basics are well listed above. BUT a good item to carry is a bike inner tube. Dual/triple purpose: tie-down of some sort, toe-strap absorber for thumbing rides off sledders and it makes the best firestarter ever. It doesn't absorb water and it burns well.

emerg space blanket, leatherman with bit kit, wire, parachute cord, knives (x2), large first aid kit, signal devices (whistle, mirror, flahlight),
safeway bags x2- I forgot my sled boots one trip and had to giver in my skateshoes for three days- had safeway bags over my dual socks and gaiters on- it was actually not too shabby, feet were warm most of the time.

Sled related:
I keep my sled tools in this JD tin to the left of my pipe.

chunk of crazy carpet for body damage repair and lost ski-doo clutch covers, hatchet, pruning saw, tow straps, tie downs,
screwdriver set with a ton of different bits, good wrenches- 1/2", 9/16", good allen keys, thumb wrench, scotch brite cleaning cloth, piston wash light, mini-mirror, spring tool, needle nose pliers, vise grip, snap light, feeler blades, 9v battery, spare wire, emerg pull start cord

And the best thing to have at 8000'- A muff pot full of salmon.

On most days I'm up at berthoud or winter park sidecountry. Usually not more than 30 minutes from the highway.
My ordinary everyday 1300c pack:

Lifelink-lexan shovel
230 or 240 probe.
Compass(never use it)
Very small CPR mask
Alpine Trekkers
Skins
Water
Reutschblock/cornice cutting cord
Extra, really thin fleece layer.
snack
Ductape, I have some on an old driver's license so it's flat. Also have a 1 inch wide roll on my chapstick.

Usually keep sunglasses and camera in jacket pockets. Extra goggles occasionally.

My search and rescue pack obviously contains more. For longer trips I use it minus some things. I still leave a fire device or two, usually a headlamp, an emergency blanket etc.
