Red to follow standard ski industry formula...

...for mediocrity: More lift capacity but no terrain expansion. (see "Golf Course or ski lifts" thread) Instead of rushing to replace motherlode and paradise, why not go for Grey? Done right it could provide redundant access to Paradise (i.e. a high traverse skier road to silversheep). It wouldn't be quite as big a deal if Motherlode or Paradise went down if there was a lift up Grey. Replacing old lifts isn't going to boost the skier visits the way a terrain expansion would. People make a point of visiting (or revisiting) areas that do terrain expansions, and it definitely sparks the interest of the ski magazines, etc. Nobody is going to make a point of vacationing at a resort just because they put new lifts in on existing terrain. Now, if they could only clone Grey to make up for the lost touring terrain... Nevertheless, it would be a worthy trade-off, in my opinion (considering the alternative).

No doubt, but we have to take small steps at a time. The biggest reason why we're replacing the lifts is because of the cost both in skier visits and maintenance fees (parts, labor, etc) of repairing broken down lifts. We just need a solid base to expand on first - get the facilities and the current chairs upgraded and where we need them, then we can move on to terrain expansion. It's definitely on the list.

The replacement of motherlode with a high-speed, high-volume lift would result in powder getting skied out much faster - no way around that. A high speed lift with the same capacity will still chop the lap times down, which will still tend to make for more gruelling copmetition for fresh tracks and also result in the powder getting skied out faster even when it doesn't seem that busy. Running the chair all the way down to the bottom would add several minutes to the lap time, which would be a good thing on the powder days. The talk around the time Silverlode was being installed was that a t-bar on Grey was a likely next step. Hopefully something like that can still be done sooner rather than later, as it would compensate somewhat for whatever happens on Granite |
