I guess this actually belongs here, not in Tech Talk...

I always heard about the Recco system as being strictly a corpse-recovery system. I had heard it was a huge chopper-mounted reciever that would take hours to deploy, by which time....

anyways, myth and rumor aside, I see a neat small backpack sized unit on their website. Since this technology is truly directional, no more kooky induction line searches, and I hear it can has a greater range than a standard tranciever, why are these units not more common?
I got no response from them when I asked. This system has been around for years, but it seems that it is not available to me. Why not? anybody know?

Recco

For the reasons that you mentioned: it is directional and therefore requires a sweep of the area best left to someone who has the ability to be above the scene. Also it is similar to a metal detector: headphones, volume adjustment and a scanning method. I had the opportunity to test one at fernie during avalanche awareness days. It would also be difficult with the more people you have around wearing recco reflectors. each one is picked up separately in the orientation that it is set. Not exactly something that you have room for in your pack. best stick with transceivers and education.
