Hey,

I am considering a move to Portland Oregon, and I am extremely curious about the ski scene... Even if you're not a local -- I mean I've never skied in Oregon or Washington at all, and I'm wondering what it's like... anyone here got something to show or tell? I'm particularly interested in where the goods would be at for someone living in Portland... lift access as well as backcountry...
best place for a pass?
best snow? best terrain? best value?
would I have to drive far for good skiing?? Where would I hit?

...I'll be out there in January checking it out...

??

There was a thread on TGR recently on this very topic (tetongravity.com/forums). Pretty sure you are skiing Hood which I think has 3 resorts on it, Ski Bowl, Meadows and Timberline I think? Lots of snow and pretty good BC I think, never been there myself. Where you live now?

Word is the Wallowas are where it's at for B/C. Not too sure how far that is from Portland though. Probably a few hours, since it is in Eastern Oregon. More of a weekend/long weekend spot maybe. Obviously there will be some closer options though.

Article about it here: http://www.offpistemag.com/themag/backissues.asp. The March 2008 pdf (takes a few moments).

Been away from the computer for a while, but wanted to say THANKS for the responses...

Grambo I checked out those threads at the TGR site, and they were great. Lots of info there, good discussions.

I dunno, everything I've seen of Mt. Hood looks totally pathetic. I could be completely wrong -- I just haven't found any images or info that shows me there's some real terrain there. I'll have to look into this Wallowas that Crank is talking about. Sounds promising. It also looks like other places, like Crystal, aren't too far away (maybe?)...

Anyways, thanks again -- and anyone with more to add, post away!
