Is it just me or are a lot of people dying this winter?
Mon, 2008-01-07 23:58
4 people in Western Canada in the last two days. Does anyone pay attention to the avalanche bulletins anymore? There's going to be snow later in the winter and there will be snow in winters to come. It's not really worth dying over. http://www.cbc.ca/canada/calgary/story/2008/01/07/alberta-avalanche.html

Well the Aussie dude, he was inbounds? Not his fault at all, I feel bad for him and his family. Not blaming Patrol either, I'm sure they did all the tests including hand charges on the slope. Just shows this sport isn't risk free. No idea on the sledders.

Very sad news....condolences to the friends and families. It seems as though this weekends storm tipped the balance for most of BC! There were some other really close calls this weekend, and most likely another fatality in the Nelson area http://www.avalanche.ca/Forums/ShowPost.aspx?PostID=3359. In the Golden area we've had numerous skier triggered slides in the last week. And there was a few avalanche involvements around Revelstoke on the weekend. The deeper instabilities have laid dormant for the last while, and they are now alive and destructive and being triggered daily by skiers. Play Safe...like Powslut said there will always be another time to ride that line etc.

Ok - so you wisely stay out of suspect BC terrain to go ride your local hill, and out of the blue, you get smacked anyways. Big White = scary stuff. Patrols / management in interior BC must be thinking holy-s--- - better take another look at our respective in-bounds terrain this year. Anybody Bigliners wondering about the stability of their favourite X & XX in-bound runs? Maybe pack some gear in-bounds for the next little while? Where do you draw the line...

Just to clarify things I had no intention of ragging on the guy who was killed inbounds at Big White. That's definately a wake up call for all of us who sometimes don't wear our gear while riding our local resorts. As for the others, I'm sure some poor decisions were made especially in light of the discussion occuring on the avalanche bulletins all season. It's a good year to cool your jets and work on wise terrain decisions instead of gnarly ones.
