How to get used to the Altitude?
Fri, 2007-02-02 11:13
Last year i was in fernie and i was fine with altitude but it was only like 6500 feet. This year im going to Breckenridge so were looking at close to 13 000 feet. Im really excited to go but i dont want to get there and be passing out and throwin up etc. So for those of you who dont live at high altitude how do you get prepared for it?I know i need to adapt myself to operate on less oxygen but i was just wondering how i should go about doing it. thanks.

How long is your trip? The best way to acclimatize is with time. If you're coming from Sea Level then it would be best to fly into Denver spend a day or two on the front range and then head up into the hills. If you don't have a lot of time then you will be more prone to getting some sort of Altitude Sickness (most likely nothing serious). I used to work in Breck and I would see tourist hurting all the time. Mainly because they were drinking. If you don't have time to really acclimatize then your best option is to stay really hydrated and fed. Eat a lot and drink a lot of water. Do not drink alcohol or you will really be asking to ruin any skiing you might plan on doing. |
