Hike and Ski Mount Baker
Fri, 2010-02-19 21:08
Well with the sunny weather Mike T had a great idea to head to Mt. Baker. This was his 10th summit and my first so it was pretty fun. We were joined by Andy Traslin as well who spent the previous day slaying lines behind blackcomb and partying all night in Whistler. I partied all night in Vancouver and on the way up we ran into Dan a young ski bum who lives in his van and skis sick lines ( a lot solo). Great crew and we hiked in the trail as low down the snow is marginal. Soon we were skinning up and most of the crevasses are filled in which made travel fast and easy. We enjoyed the day and climbed to the headwall were we could see the wind coming off the top. Up the headwall was windpacked windblown snow and so we skinned as high as possible before the crampons came out. Right at the roll of the headwall we triggered a remote which propagated across to the right side of the headwall and dropped a small avy. The crack was big enough to scare us but we cruised up without incident. Most people head straight up the head wall and it was a good thing we made our way up the left side. Up top the wind was howling and we cruised across the flats to the true summit...my heated jacket was awesome!! We made our way back down the headwall tiptoeing with no problems and cruised down in the later afternoon sun in sweet soft powder....a nice hike out left us at a sweet pizza place for dinner...thanks boyz
