A couple excerpts from today's bulletins: Quote:
A "pineapple express" loaded with warm air and lots of precipitation will make its way to the Rockies. The forecast models are suggesting between 50 and 60 cm of snow in the Alpine by storms end. This front will hit forcefully, pushing out the cold Arctic air with winds from the west up to 100 km/hr. Quote:
A major pacific frontal system with copious amounts of tropical moisture is set to hit the area this afternoon through Monday. Forecast snow amounts are 10 to 20cm today and 20 to 25cm tonight. On Monday a second wave is forecast to bring much more precipitation with rising freezing levels and potentially rain above valley bottom by the afternoon. That, coupled with high-extreme danger ratings mean the next few days would be a great time to ski in bounds. Probably wouldn't hurt to wear your beacon there too. Although storm touring is a blast, those of you that don't know what you're doing need to watch some avy videos on youtube and stay the fuck out of the backcountry.

i think that Golden will not only survive but thrive through this next system. Freezing levels are only forecasted to go to 1000 m and it's going to dump (which it already is) through out the next day or two. Then it'll go cold again. Avi conditions could be a little sketch here through this system. There's a lot of surface hoar, particularly at tree line.

Next Saturday would be sick for sure at the Horse. nate

I know you'd probably get annoyed by guys sloughing you out from above or skiing lines while your in the slide path. But it's not a reason to act like such a dick by telling them to stay out of the backcountry.

OMFG - woke up this morning to about 20cms of fresh overnight (downtown Golden). Just finished shoveling about 1/3rd of my driveway and it was dry, the stuff dreams are made of. In the hour and a bit I have been outside the temp is warming, the snowflakes now are getting smaller and falling faster....it's 9:30 and I am worried what is going to happen. The upper portions of the Horse will be fine, no doubt about that. The bottom might become quite packable. nate

Still about minus 5 in town, but likely just a bit of cold air trapped in the valley still. Snow has changed to freezing rain and looks like the freezing line is creeping up the mountain pretty quick! I'll post a quick video of some town scenery shortly....it's about to get really messy.

it rained all day here in town in Fernie... but the snow line on the ski hill didn't seem to go up that high.. I could see snow in the trees about half way up... so not as bad as it could have been... thats for sure. forecast is for the temp to slowly drop to about -5 tomorrow (tuesday) night and turn to snow.. then tapering off to flurries on wednesday. this rain is actually going to be good for our snowpack.. it was dust on grass and rocks before this.. and now it will be nicely "consolidated"

yah, forgot about the silver queen. If there is no snow tonight I heard everything may be shut down including xcountry. On another note, do any golden boys think with the temps going way down again it might suck some moisture out of the alpine stuff? i love the hill but last year was such a gong show opening day, not worth the drive really if the snow isn't top notch.

I dunno, I'm no rocket surgeon, but if you watch the new video on skiinggolden.com I think you will be happy. The snow looks dry enough for me, and the temps should be getting colder from now towards the weekend... my guess is it's good to go, upper slopes are probably going to be sick. nate

Thanks For the first couple runs of the day yes that would be my game plan, like always though after the Gondy runs 2400-3600 people to the top (first 2 to 3 revolutions of the cable) it will be chopped up, bring a second set up for the rest of the day. nate

freezing level didin't manage to stay down in Fernie.. rain to the top and it pretty much melted all the snow in town. flurries over the next few days and then dropping into a -20 deep freeze aren't making me get to excited about opening day on saturday..... but flurries around here can often turn into huge dumps... so we will see.

The Lake was awesome the last 3 days, no rain over here. Brownshirt was deep and Paradise bowl opened on Tuesday. Today my legs could only handle 4 laps of Paradise bowl, charging through the chopped pow, my quad muscles were shredded. Still lots of surprises to destroy your ski bases. Everything is really tracked now, good to pack it down for the base.

Shralp is away for a few days, not sure if anyone else will have better info, but sounds to me like the stuff got wet pretty high.... nate

heard it like that up to tower 15 on the gondi, that doesn't mean much to me but whatever..... it is a lot better then what we have here in the okanagan. It's going to be nice to not have to earn the turns for the first time this season. At least my legs are in shape and the edges are sharp. It will be a good test for the "Magne Traction"

Tower 15 is right at the very bottom of bowl over, where the bowl over ski out meets the cat track....if it is still good above that all the good chutes and drops etc are still fair game. Enjoy! nate

It was good, and bluebird up top mmmmmm. 5 - 10cm's on top of the rain crust made it manageable to the cat track from the super bowl to inbounds exit, great summer grooming on whatever run that is. |
