TR: The last kick (KHMR~closing weekend)
Submited By alberta_hoser On 2007-04-11
The old man and I headed out to meet Tom and his dad in Golden mid week. While there was a decent snow fall a few days earlier, it was HOT. KHMR could easily stay open for another month with their huge snow pack but they were no longer making profits (the rumor I heard was that they were losing $20,000/day). It has been an epic season at the horse and I was pretty excited to be there one last time this season. Steeping off the gondola you're surrounded by big peaks with some of the most challenging inbounds terrain I've ever skied.
Day one: Murky skies with good vis.

I took this opportunity to shoot a lot of photos of my Dad since I don't ski with him very often anymore. He's responsible for this horrible addiction I have with skiing.

Spring skiing is underrated. I had as much fun over the next few days as I have on average pow days. Soft corn, fast groomers, and beautiful weather all were major contributors.

I finished off day 1 with an interesting small double stage.

It defiantly wasn't hucking conditions and I was going for some more technical smaller airs.

(Tom's angle)

Day 2: Blue skies, high of 16 Celsius in town.

More steeps from the wiser generation. For years it was my Dad pushing my limits skiing, taking me down the whitehorns when I was 6 years old at louise. Now, I'm skiing ~50 days a year as a weekend warrior and I'm pushing his limits...I think both of us find the progression pretty cool. (he still kicks my ass at most other sports though)

We hiked terminator because Tom hadn't been up it yet. It's always fun to see the view from up there.

I ended up skiing faster than I ever have before this weekend. The conditions weren't really there for it but the steep aprons at kicking horse allow for optimum straightlining fun.

"Consequence" on terminator ridge, I manged to straightline 3/4 of this. Easily the fastest I've ever gone on skis off-piste.

In honor of the epic season at kicking horse we ate at eagle's eye for dinner that night. Watching the sunset after our meal...

Looking towards stairway to heaven

...

Down the valley towards Invermere

Sun dogs give me big photographic boners.

Day 3: Temp: Hot. Base: Lots. New Snow. Vis: Unlimited

Starting off the day with CPR was the routine.

We weren't bothering with many photos. The mixture of minimal clothing, soft corn, rowdy locals, and intense heat were keeping us well occupied. In spring I realize how much more there is to skiing than skiing. The outdoors, the sun, friends, family, the smell of an emerging spring forest, goggle tans, fire pits, sharing a short friendly conversation with somebody you've never met before on a lift, the lure of the mountains, and being able to live in the moment...escaping the restrains of the modern urban life. When you're skiing there are no deadlines, bosses, teachers, or nagging girlfriends. Skiing is a giant stress ball. Uniting people across race, generation, and sex. It is one of a handful things in the world that has the power to bring people together and connect you with people you've never met before. We all have something in common, as a community we live as partners, competitors, and friends.

...Enough of that.

Show me how it's done. Now that's a cat track jump.

I love spring.
