Storming the Ramparts 3.31
Submited By alberta_hoser On 2007-04-02
Sir Jeff and I rode our steeds out to Sunshine Village in hopes of gaining honor and respect from the village people. We received news from King Arthur that if we were to succeed we would be invited to the round table. Late into the night we were up sharping the edges of our weapons and carefully preparing for the guaranteed onslaught. The Ramparts of Sunshine (visible from Standish, Wawa, and lookout mountain.) were recently made home by a rather large dragon. This was a task that I had looked at for several years but never been able to sum up the courage or been confident enough in my swordsmanship to attempt such a feat.

The goal. The lair was somewhere around the summit.

The people of Sunshine village were obviously suffering. The recent melt-freeze cycle had suddenly stopped leaving just a frozen wasteland in it's place. We had a feeling this dragon was disturbing the weather causing this terrible situation. Jeff and I almost called off the whole thing after encountering bad visibility and possible snowfall later that day. However, the plight of the villagers was enough to motivate us to at least try to identify the dragon on a recon run. We had heard from an old magi that this dragon had the ability to cause a phenomenon known as avalanches and summon violent storms if he was provoked. Keeping this in mind, we choose our route carefully.

Jeff starts off leading.

We were switching off often in order to keep our strength up.

Making my way through a small rock crux after ascending the first face.

Jeff thinking of the maidens in distress in the village below, continues upwards.

The climbing became quite steep as we approached the ridge summit. The dragon seemed to be alerted to our presence as he tried with all his might to blow us off the mountain.

As we summit the ridge the dragon let up. We were hopefully that he had lost track of us, unfortunately he was merely setting an ambush in his lair.

Trying to get a good look at the battlefield that lay before us

We set out along the ridge with renewed vigor after spotting the dragon's nest.

Jeff putting his manhood to the test

Once on the summit I could smell the dragon we were so close.

Jeff making his way down to the entrance of the lair. Where we would draw our weapons and suit up for the battle.

At this point we were eye to eye with the beast, sizing each other up.

Jeff was ready and with his weapons unsheathed he charged the monster.

...we had underestimated the powers of this dragon. He had lead us to a false entrance. He took flight out the back of his lair and summoned the clouds to block out the sun and we were blind making our way out of his cavern.

Eventually we found our way to the escape route. I was shaken by the ambushed we had walked into and after a rough start picked up enough speed to outrun my sluff. The top 5cm of snow was obviously heat affected and was sluffing heavily on steep terrain.

Jeff follows out the exit.

Our line was thrown off at the summit and we had to traverse to escape the dragon's onslaught.

However, we were not going to back down so easily.
Although exhausted from the first climb, the people of Sunshine were depending on us. We climbed quickly hoping to catch the dragon off guard. I pulled out my camera only once, to get Jeff summiting for the second time.

Reaching the summit, again. It was an incredibly hard climb as the beast had used his control of the wind to blow over our entire bootpack. Breaking trail a second time on the same hike was an unexpected shock.

We spotted the dragon in a different part of the mountain and Jeff quickly attacked. The beast was hiding behind the rocks on the right.

"CHARGE!"

Jeff was unable to defeat the monster by himself and I dropped in. I used a magic turn to turn the beast into rocks as Jeff distracted him. Jeff took this picture just as the dragon (shown on the left) was turned to rock.

We were even able to pillage the treasures that the beast had stolen from the people of Sunshine.

...

...

Jeff plundering the lair. Reaping the rewards

The slayed monster and his home.

The villagers rejoiced at our news of victory and we were soon inducted into the round table.

*this line had been on my mind for the past 2 years and finally all the variables lined up. I was stoked to say the least.
