TR: Taking out the Trash
Submited By alberta_hoser On 2007-03-28
Headed up to Sunshine village for the weekend staying in Banff. Way more snow than I expected.

-The storm
Delirium was closed on Saturday due to visibility and a growing avalanche hazard. We skied some laps off of Standish while waiting for visibility to improve, still hoping to get into the dive. Namely, the garbage and virgin chutes.

Somebody littered a bunch of this white stuff everywhere...

Even the air pollution in the Virgins was enough to make me get out of there fast

We didn't take very many photos simply because airborne particles of waste were blocking out the sun, making the light bad. Eventually, we took at look at the Dive (we hoped the lower traffic zone would produce a cleaner environment) it was still closed and the patrol didn't sound to confident on it opening on Saturday. However, the west was open so we immediately decided to check that out. Wind bluffed pow on the "wrong side" of lookout was something special. R*** had effected the lower elevations. I blame you and your over consuming, CO2 spewing, global warming causing habits. However, the west delivered regardless.

Tom, on his way to the landfill.

Above the chutes the snow was perfect. Lighter and drier than much of what we had been skiing and most importantly untracked in the trees still by lunch. The lower portions were spring like but were still nice.

We took many laps through that for the rest of the afternoon (disgusted at the amount of white garbage covering our precious rocks)

In Banff we ran into some shady locals.

This one crept up on us, but was all ears when we engaged him in a conversation about the excess white garbage at high elevations.

He blamed humanity for this gross transformation of his park and demanded a finger from Tom as punishment. I choose not to include the next few frames of this sequence as they are too disturbing to upload.

Jeff came up that night to help us plan the best course of action to deal with the copious amount of littering occurring that night at SSV.

Jeff is used to living in filth but this is far to much for any man to bare.

After testing out the air quality, we decided that more extensive experimentation was required while waiting for the dive to open.

Noticing the plight of this poor tree, Tom tries to clean it off.

We found a nice little mini golf area that we had some how missed during past days. Steep with soft ledges to jump off seemed like a good area to make note of the environmental impact on this ecosystem.

Dropping into a fast double.

A view from the bottom of the same line, take notice of the trees. They are obviously struggling to survive in this contaminated ecosystem.

Tom goes dumpster diving

...

...

The air was surprisingly clean of pollutants on this aspect.

I considered pillowing this line but didn't want to get my pants dirty so I cleared the whole thing out of the frame.

Still mucky at 11am.

Jeff became delirious from the so called "fresh" mountain air. In order to bring him back to realty we put him through the washing machine.

He resisted

At one point we he sat down, refusing to get cleaned up.

Much better, we thought he was almost squeaky clean at this point.

He thought otherwise.

We headed over to continental after cleaning up the garbage chutes quite nicely. Meeting a funky euro on the way up the lift he needed a partner so he joined us.

and holy shit was it good. We lapped it as fast as we could. I have never done the fatboy traverse so fast or with such determination. We calmed down after it was getting skied out and did some testing in the trees.

Nasty.

Said euro, attempting to sanitize his board.

It's no use.

ewww....

I found some radioactive debris on our last lap through the dive.

*On a more serious note, Vibes to the patroller that was buried in an avalanche on Thursday. He will recover but after seeing the debris, I am amazed he's alive.
