Wow, Another Year
Submited By JohnnyQ On 2006-12-03
I started snowboarding about 4 years ago... Winter of 2002. Hold on, lets back up a few years earlier... 2000.

I was introduced to skiing by my then girlfriend. I was living in North Bay at the time and she took me to the ski hill in Mattawa (about 40 minutes east of North Bay).

I suppose that the klutsy way I sat on the chairlift or getting off of the chair without falling over and the lack of instruction for me should have been a clue as to the extent of training I was to get from her.

She started with teaching me the basics of skiing... at the top of the hill... was that she pointed me down the hill. Did you know that no matter which way you try to turn that you can only go down hill (odd that)... :icon_confused: it also doesn't matter which way down the hill you point yourself... because you can only gain more speed.

Lets say that after 2, maybe 3, very shaky turns I was going fairly fast and I have a weak left knee (due to a car accident).

So I'm being put on the stretcher by the patrollers and I am pissed. :icon_cry: (oh yes, I fell and twisted that knee again)... And that was my first downhill skiing experience.

Flash forward to the winter of 2003... I had been dating a great girl for about 8 months. Her name is GL

I must say that I am very lucky... she happens to be a recipient of a family membership to a private club and her family has a great little cabin on Georgian Bay. VERY VERY LUCKY

I told GL that I would be happy to sit in the little cabin while she and her family skied away the weekends. Yeah... right.
