first day east coast style
Submited By jahpeak On 2007-12-20
November 17th was opening day for Jay Peak this year, with over 16" of powder what more could you ask for.

This is my forth your as a student at Bishops(Qc), my forth year with a seasons pass at Jay Peak, and my forth opening day in a row. November 17th, 2007 was the only one of those opening days I remember with over 16" of the fluffy white stuff how could I not. The three previous opening days involved one run, The Jet, being opened with a lot of man-made snow and a lot of skiers and riders on the one run. This year was totally different everything on the Stateside was not only open but somehow there was somehow enough of a base that made all the glades skiable.
My first run of the day was in a little patch of trees to skiers right of the lift line. It consisted of face shots, pillow drops, and no touching bottom. The second run we went to a classic east coast local cut glade that again consisted of face shots and pillow drops. On this one however I clipped some branches underneath, flipped over and landed on a stump. This was the only time I clipped anything the entire day. The next run was into Kitz Woods, and again face shots galore.
The next 4 hours were a blur of wonderfully deep east coast tree skiing, that only those that have experienced know what its like. It was the equivalent to a midwinter epic powder day but in November. By 1 o'clock my fellow powderhounds and I were exhausted. We spent the rest of the afternoons sitting in the parking lot drinking dirty cheap American beer, not even talking just living in the movement of the best first day ever. I would have been happy not matter how good or how much snow there was, I mean I was skiing again after 6 months, how couldn't I be happy, but hey everyone loves powder. Did I mention this was November 17th and there was 16" of fresh, and Jay Peak and been closed for less than 6 months.
It as taken me a while to actually get to writing this, over a month, but in that time Jay Peak has gotten almost 200" of awesomeness. And lots more face shots for everyone.

P.S. For any of you that don’t know what east coast tree skiing is about watch any of the Meathead movies and you will understand.
