2001 Redbull Snowthrill of Alaska

The SickBird award went to upcoming Canadian youngster, Ryan Oakden. He took two great runs, which moved him way up in the standings. For his first run, he skied right down the fall line and billygoated into a very exposed section. He quickly jumped down into a small snow pillow and then pointed them off a 40-footer.

Oakden's second run was even more exciting as he skied a similarly
technical line as the first but straight lined a double which ended
in him throwing a 90-footer to his ass and skiing away.

Ryan
Oakden

Style: Progressive big mountain

Nickname: Oaktown

Residence: Whistler

Sponsors: Rossignol, Smith, Helly Hansen, Frozen Ocean

Hometown: Fernie

CP: Why did you move out to the coast?

RO:
I moved out to Whistler for the terrain and to have a good time
basically

CP: Has Whistler been helping you progress your skiing?

RO:
Living in Whistler definitely does help to progress and tone your
skills. I have gotten a bit better since making the move from Fernie.

CP: You won the World Tour Big Mountain Championships in
Tigne France in 2001 and finished 3rd that same year at the World
Tour stop in Snowbird Utah. I know you focused more on the film
side of the industry this last season so let's here a little about
filming and what you accomplished.

RO:
I did a lot of filming with MSP last season and worked on a segment,
in between trips I got out with PFP in Whistler and should have
a segment with them as well.

CP: This summer while I was coaching up at the Camp of Champions
I took note that Oaktown isn't a one time wonder and that he does
have some thug style tricks to bronx any fool in an alley. Watch
your back when Oaktown throws his cab 270, disaster to rail. He
doesn't hide that one in the bag o tricks for long.

RO:
I like changing it up. It's all about having fun and learning different
things. you can't go and do big mountain in the summer so I might
as well do other things on my skis.

CP: I noticed you throwing down on a pair of fat twins.
Why not a park ski?

RO:
I like to keep my weight and length of my skis as close to my big
mountain skis as possible so that when I am on my big sticks it
feels more natural throwing down and I am more used to the feeling.
Its just an easier transition keeping the skis the same when throwing
park tricks in natural terrain.

CP: Going back to last season, I remember you and I hooked
up in Revelstoke to do some filming and you brought your snowmobile
with you. Where were you expecting to go with that beater and what
decade did it come from?

RO:
I was going all the way with that sled! Well... it didn't actually
make the cut when it came time to leave the parking lot.

CP: I recall helping you put it back on your truck. Where
is it now?

RO:
I sold the sled back in Whistler and i still haven't got the money
(July 7th, 2002)

CP: Now that you have branded a certain image and style
behind your skiing are your sponsors keeping up the support

RO:
Yeah I'm happy to be involved with all of them and hopefully they
feel the same so we can keep the same trend going through out the
years.

During the preliminary research
for this this article, Ryan was spotted on the Blackcomb glacier
killing it on a pair of snowblades. Rumor has it his little skis
picked up more chicks in one day then his big skis have in his lifetime.
Oakden was unavailable for comment on this issue as he is currently
skiing Whistler pow and filming with the PFP crew. Funny enough
without Ryan commenting on this issue I dug a little deeper only
to expose his deepest fetish and emotional passion for snowllerblading
in his Helly Hansen Athlete profile

WHAT MAKES YOU LAUGH?

Snowblades.

WHAT MAKES YOU CRY?

Snowblades in powder.
