Some times the stars align and you get a day that is out of this world. That is exactly how it was the the day we skied the AK test peice, Meteorite... Are You a POWRIDER? Gambling is about the risk to reward ratio… Quoting the movie Steep: "Alaska is the North Shore of Skiing." Some would say the best heli skiing in the world. Steep and Deep. This year Valdez and the Chugach had over 800 inches of the "velvet" snow.

Some times the stars align and you get a day that is out of this world. That is exactly how it was the the day we skied Meteorite...

Our crew of eight all met and ski toured in the Whistler area. Our group reflected the melting and international place that Whistler was. Japan, France, Spain, Quebec, US and BC were all among the places of origin. This helped to add to the experience and decision making process of the group.

Many think that heli skiing is way too expensive. We kept costs low by camping and cooking the entire time on the top of Thompson Pass. The tent life was cold and not as plush as the RVs but cheap!! We bought a 8 man tent to cook and hang out in from Walmart. The other advice I would give is to pay for a private heli and "hobs" time. This way you have the option to go where you want and when. You are not thrown into the public ships and with people you don't know. If you are efficient you can do more runs and the choice runs in less time. We had 8 people, so 2 groups of 4. This also makes it less expensive by dividing the total into 1.5. (Many times one group can be picked up by the road which saves costly air time. The big hits…Diamond, Valley of the Tusk, Kiwi, Flat Iron, Spinal Tap, Girls, Python, Cherry, RFS, ETC…..

For me it was the third trip and like they say "Third time is a charm." We chose to go with ABA Alaskan Backcountry Adventures (The Alaskan Heli Pioneers.) The best part of this outfit is the mellow attitude, experience and guides who love to push it and ski tour as well.

Lastly allow plenty of time because there is not a lot of tree skiing and when the vis is bad there is no flying. A great down day activity is cat skiing off the pass with long time local Peter. Road runs are also fun, and of course Alyeska ski area. Turn Again Pass, and Hatchers Pass all provide great bad weather options around Anchorage.

Are you feeling Lucky?? Wanna take a risk a "Gamble." Well here's my answer….
High Risk = High Rewards, but "Luck is what happens when preparation meets opportunity."

POWRIDERS UNITE!!!
