Cody Barnhill is a 24 year old professional skier living and shredding out of Salt Lake City, Utah. Cody has been shredding on two sticks for about 20 years. Born and raised in Anchorage, Alaska he still cherishes the Chugach Range as his favorite place to ski. Recently Cody and I teamed up with a few others for the Salt Lake City Shootout Photo Competition. I was able to ask him a few questions.
What gets you going and keeps you motivated to do what you do?
It's always fun and there's always more that I can do, some personal limit that I can push. I have also always liked shooting because it's more like collaboration art than normal skiing. It adds a whole other perspective and motivation of creating something that's cool to look at and have fun doing it.
Who are your role models? Who do look up to and why?
I don't really know how to answer that. I have always been into people that are motivated to do what they want to because they love it, and not for any other shallow reason like money or fame or anything. I guess I don't really have a solid answer; It's more a type of person than an actual person.
Who do you shred with most often?
Frankie Lee, Rachael Burks, Pip Hunt, Julian Carr, Billy Poole (R.I.P.)... that's kinda the Utah crew...
What was the deepest day you've ever had? Where and when did you inhale the pow?
Alta-Bird-Secret-Location, March 2004, Submarine turns. Looking where I was going between turns then full white room...
Whats your favorite line you’ve ever skied… Where, when, why?
That's a hard question. I don't know that I can pick just one, because it changes every time I ski a new line that I love... The most recent was my line in the Semi-Finals at the Snowbird comp. It was pretty exposed with a mandatory 25 footer at the crux when I picked it out I didn't think it was doable, then I looked at it for 2 days and went for it.
Gnarliest travel or skiing experience… What happened…? spill details!
When I was in Seattle last season the house we were staying at caught on fire and we had to wake up and put it out. Turns out the guy-we-were-staying-with's roommate brought home a girl from the bar and somehow her pants caught on fire in the middle of his bedroom. It was kinda weird really, we couldn't figure out what had happened...
What else do you do, what else are you into?
I have been doing a lot of drawing/painting, playing music, Freeride Mtn Biking, cooking feasts, reading books. I'm kinda nerdy really, most times I'd rather cook dinner at home with a few people than go to a bar...
What’s on your ipod? Who are you listening to?
Way too much music to put down in a list... But lately I have been listening to a lot of Godspeed You! Black Emperor, Buddy Wakefield, Explosions in the Sky, The Decemberists, Leftover Crack, Sole, Alias & Tarsier, etc...
Who are your sponsors?
Discrete Headwear,
Rossignol,
Smith Optics/Helmets,
The North Face, Skullcandy, Beyond Coastal, The Levitation Project
Where are you off too next?
I am going to go to Alaska for the IFSA big mountain comp (if all goes to plan...)
Cody has been filming with both TGR and the Levitation Project. He has been shooting with some of the best photogs around and has been in Europe this season with Powder magazine. Keep an eye out for his segments next fall!
