Liberty is a boutique ski builder out of Avon, Colorado in the heart of Summit County Colorado. We were lucky enough to get our hands on a few pairs of their boards this year and were pleasantly surprised, if not blown away by how great they are!
They are built with an all wood core (bamboo actually, stronger, lighter and more bouncy) that actually spans the whole width of the ski! Combine that with their super strong side walls, fatter, tougher edges, and P-Tex 4000 bases and the result is a super light, responsive and stable ski. The actual dimensions of the 187’s are 135 – 105 – 122… so with 105 under foot, you have fantastic float, while their not to wide as to compromise the resort shred factor.
At first the Helix’s reminded me of the line prophet 100’s, being easy to turn, close to center mounted, and light, but when I really noticed the difference was skiing the hard pack crud at Louise. Rather than chattering out of control, the Helix’s would grip and power through One of their secrets is using a thin layers of rubber to dampen the vibrations. Some how they carve more like a race ski than a chattering twin tip. The 187’s seem to hold like a 194 and turn like a 180, and with the skinnier tail, it allows you to be on your toes and aggressive even in the deep pow.
Bottom line, if your looking for a super fun ski that very few of your buddies have, check out Liberty. The graphics are cool, it rides like a dream, and every year their skis are getting better and better. You should check out the new Double Helix coming for next year...
