I had the opportunity to meet up with one of Australia’s most established freeskiing competitors Janina Kuzma, at the Fernie’s Girls Day Out event. Girls Day Out is a two day event for females skiers looking to improve there skiing or be inspired by some outstanding female skiers. Janina was a selected coach to the advanced group aka the “steeze sleeze” (name in the trivia competition) who attended the event and I was curious to investigate how Janina’s experience was at Girls Day Out:
This was the first time I've coached any girls program so for me it was a great learning experience. What I realized is having this program 'Girls Day Out' really produces a positive and supportive learning environment which helps girls/women of all abilities to push their confidence in all skiing possibilities.
What I noticed in the groups that I coached was that there are girls out there that are willing to push themselves, but they just need encouragement and direction.
Why do you feel it is important to establish a program like Girls Day Out?
It's important to establish a program like Girls Day Out because there are girls that want to ride, learn and progress and need an outlet to do so. At Girls Day Out females can gain direction on how to compete in a big mountain competition or even learn to face their fear and not hold back, it’s great we all can learn from each other!
We need programs like this for the purpose to inspire girls into the skiing movement in a fun and comfortable environment and what a better way to enjoy it than with a bunch of girls who rip. What girls day out has brought forward is that it is fun to ride with other girls and meet new friends that you can continue to ride with throughout the season.
What was the best part of Girls Day Out for you as a coach?
For me as a coach, the best part was the pleasure I got from watching the other girls ski and improve during the two days. Over the two days I saw girls push themselves to the limits throwing themselves off cliffs, busting through the crud and ripping the best powder Fernie has to offer.
What was the best moment at Girls Day Out?
I would definitely say the build up to the big cliff huck know as 'Hollywood' was the best moment of Girls Day Out. Half way up the lift I told the girls that it was time to start cliff jumping, I slyly pointed out the cliff and was struck by pure silence for the rest of the ride up the lift. I could feel the fear, excitement and adrenaline pouring out of the girls. It was awesome – they sent it!
Please explain how you foresee Girls Day Out helping out the ski industry:
Women/girls in skiing have so many opportunites these days. More companies are beginning to understand what women want and are providing products specifically focused for us. Having a program like 'Girls Day Out' gets more women/girls involved in skiing and gives them the opportunity to understand what's available out there for themselves.
What was the most rewarding/ special thing about girls day out:
On the first day I had the youngest girl in my group. She was super shy as first but soon after found out that she was actually this really outgoing kid. Anyways, she ripped and we where all blown away. So we told her about the Kimberly junior big mountain competition and she signed up and we know she is just going to kick ass. I'm pretty stoked.
Janina would also like to thank:
I'd just like to also say a big thanks to Leah Evans for putting on an awesome event in Fernie. 3 days counting to the end of 2007 and what better way to end the year then with a whole bunch of ripping chicas. Also a big shout out to the other coaches who made girls day out in fernie possible - Sarah Oakden, Martha Burley (free heeling), Sonja Lercher, and Lindsay McDermind. You guys rock!
The next Girls Day Out events will be happening at Red Mountain, Kicking Horse, Sun Peaks and Big White. For further information or to register please visit www.girlsdoski.com
