Golden residents woke to 48 cms of new snow overnight on December 3rd. It was one of the biggest single dumps in recent years. The town and highways were immobilized for the most part and most of the skiing that was done was horizontal. Cross Country skiers shared the roads with sledders and snowplows and most people spent the day shoveling their driveways. The avalanche danger was rated triple extreme for the South Columbia's on Avalanche.ca and only the brave ventured out onto vertical slopes.
Reports trickling from staff at Kicking Horse Resort said the freezing line held near the top of Pioneer Chair. With opening day just around the corner, just how epic it will be hangs in the balance.
The town is now full of soaked snow and all skiers are watchful of what the cooling temperatures that are forecast will do. Best case scenario is that the cooler air will suck out the moisture and leave the powder. The only down side is the inevitable settling that will happen. Optimists will speak of the base that has now been generated; powderhounds will suffer the fact that just a few degrees could have made the difference and kept us fluffy and not just covered.
