This summer I meet Julian Carr in Las Lenas. The initial buzz was that he was throwing huge, long-dart front flips in the Andes backcountry filming for the Levitation Project. Then he through an awesome backflip under my very own feet on the Marte Chair. I caught up with him and as you'll also discover, Julian is more than just a guided missile on skis.
Name- Julian Carr
Home Resort- Snowbird, Utah
Age- 28
Website- www.juliancarr.net
Sponsors- Rossignol, Syder, Smith, Hestra, Discrete, Altabird.com, Skullcandy, Levitation
How was your time down in Sth America?
Cool to go down there because you get a mountainn experience, but also get a really cool cultural experience. Aspen meets Tijuana.
What is the deal with the Levitaion Project?
The Levatation Project is a film/clothing Project out of Utah. It is the first company of its kind to showcase skiing and snowboarding in a cohesive matter.
What should we expect from the film?
It will be super sick. All the non skiing aspects of the movie are just as good as the riding. Nico put money into skits and got top end producers from the film industry. It is something never seen before- a mix of Hollywood skits and high quality riding. Most film companies start out with C grade everything, but The Levitation Project started with A grade everything.
It is fair to say you like to huck your meat. How the hell do you not f#$% yourself up?
Just make sure you dont jump cliffs with out spending enough time in the area to know the snowpack and where the rocks are. Always know that the take offs and your own abilities are just as important as deep snow.
And off the snow?
Go to the gym, plyometrics, diving boards and blast the quads.
How long have you been skiing and been a pro?
Skied since 8th grade and pro for 3 years.
What keeps you stoked when skiing is your job?
When you arrive at an area and you know you are going to be filming, you start to see things from an audiences perspective, its cool. You are having fun for yourself, but you are documenting it.
What are your plans for the coming Winter?
I plan on it snowing a shit-load in Utah so I dont have to travel like I did last year.
You recently started your own street/shred wear company, Discrete. Whats the story behind that and how is it going?
I started it and then last summer Billy Poole became a partner. We will have a booth in Vegas at the SIA for the first time to really push it out there, so we are pumped up.
It is a company that has no connection to anything. It has a steady pulse on simplicity. Right now we are focusing on headwear and expanding into sunglasses for 08/09.
Its the sickest brand ever.
What else should people know about Julian Carr?
That I am not Native American. That I am really, really good at scissors, paper, rock. (he is- he killed me everytime)
