The town of Fernie is home to some of the most natural and talented snowboarders north of the border. Soul riders living out their dreams in a place where it is more about shredding for yourself and with your bros then trying to flash your new threads and pimpin' the snow bunnies. Most fly under the radar like stealth bombers with no
intention to be discovered. Thommy Westcott is one of these pure specimens who has made Fernie his stomping ground for the past 5 seasons, quietly destroying everything he can find to ride.
Thommy Westcott Demo Reel 50mgsAka Thommy Dubs, Toe Jam or T-Bone is a freerider at heart, but a rider who can take it to the street or the park and make it all look steezy.
Originally hailing from a tiny village in South Eastern Ontario, Thommy grew up riding the early 90's version of the "noboard" down small slopes into ditches at the tender age of 5, while also trying to hang ten on his styrofoam body board when the surf really got going down on the Big Rideau lake. He made the most of life in the East, but bolted for the promised land just after his 17th birthday and never looked back. He took to planting trees and surfing to bide his time during the off seasons.
06/07 was a big season for the lad. He spent the season representing Commit Snow and Skate while traveling and filming with the Dubs Brothers Films crew, throwing down for the first of many flicks coming from the company entitled "Cold Lampin". He's currently somewhere between a Tuna and a hard place north of Vancouver Island learning how to be a fisherman. He's not the type of guy to stay still for too long. He's always on the hunt for some kind of adventure.
He's currently seeking sponsorships, free food and good karma.
He's ready to go balls out for you.
Where are you from? What did you do growing up?
I grew up in the small town of Westport, Ontario, population 700. I
spent most of my time on the lake, fishing and pirating beer from the
American fishing boats down at the local harbor. I also used to get
chased around a lot by drunk locals while riding my skateboard. I made
the most of living in bum F#$# nowhere.
What are you doing in the off season?
I am currently living on the coast in BC, getting ready to commercial
fishing up around the Queen Charlotte Islands with my girlfriend and
her father.
Who are your heroes in snowboarding and in life?
Heroes? Well I don't think I can say I really have any heroes in
snowboarding I never really paid much attention to the world of pro's.
I do huge super tweaked methods for Craig Kelly a lot though. He had
the best style. It was really only about what was going on in the
back yard at mom's house back in Ontario. My bro and I built our own
snow park and had everything we needed. I would say my brother is my
hero. We have always pushed each other hard every day. We used to ride
under flood lights every night until our mum made us go to bed. I
really look up to my grandad as well. He is always encouraging me to
give it my all.
What are your future goals in snowboarding and in life?
I want to make more films and continue to have fun and to do what I
love. I want to ride around the world and find new gnarly things to
eat, the gnarliest food from each country, like the purees in chile!
mmmm Stamina!
Who's your crew on the and off the mountain?
When we are filming I am usually with my bro Matty Dubs and Mikel Witlox,
but at the end of the day when i get home I like to put the kettle on
sit back and enjoy a cup of tea.
What's it been like traveling and filming this past season?
It's been the best year I have had. Traveling, filming, helping cover
freeski comps for Biglines.com and surf comps on the coast. Just being
on the front lines all season long. It's been totally Cold Lampin'!
What are your plans for the upcoming 07/08 season?
I hope to ride on the West coast of Norway for a few months filming
with little Glenn and the crew there and getting some big lines in the
books.
Hopefully I'll just be lurking the whole winter and slashing every
frozen wave I find.
Anyone you would like to thank?
Well of course mom and dad for helping in every way.
Grandad for making me think about my knees and finding the perfect
landing. Matty dubs, my big bro, for working his ass off for me and
Jeff Arrnold from Volcom for keeping me warm and looking good in the
court yard all season.
Check Thommy out in "Cold Lampin'" out this fall from Dubs Brothers Films.
