U.S. Ski Team member and Olympian Resi Stiegler is frightfully funny in a tell-it-how-it-is way. She’s unpredictable, colorful, and a little “crazy” – and she’ll let you know it. “I have to warn you, Julia and I might go crazy tonight,” she said before The Sounds concert in Zurich, Switzerland. Olympic gold medalist Julia Mancuso joined Resi for the adventure to see their favorite band perform at the hip Abart Music Club. They screamed songs like “Tony the Beat,” danced, and laughed until the hard-core blonde lead singer – who sang with a cig attached to her lip and beer in hand – flicked ashes on them and left the stage.
These racers, readers, have off-the-charts energy, for the concert happened after a World Cup slalom race and a six-hour drive from Germany to northern Switzerland to see the Swedish rock band. Afterward, the duo bid au revoir to Zurich to drive another hour or so to Lenzerheide to ski in a practice run the next morning before the World Cup finals began. Just a day-in-the-life of Resi the racer and her sidekick “Jules” (or visa versa).
No one who has met Resi for even just one minute would say she is boring or other such bunk. Resi is as multi-dimensional as they come in Wyoming. She plays the fiddle, shoots shotguns, and swigs car bombs – whole-heartedly embracing her Wild West self. She also taps into her inner child. Resi “loves” honey and the taste of rain, cigars and snow, laughing and goldfish, dancing, dollhouses, and bubble gum. Was “dancing” mentioned? Resi is a 24/7 dance party whether it’s in her head or on the floor. Everyone is her best friend. She, for example, has 460 virtual “friends” on MySpace, and assuredly, plenty of actual friends – and loves them all.
The 21 year old is the top technical alpine specialist on the U.S. Ski Team. Known to have one of the best second runs in the sport, Resi waits to pounce on her prey living up to her nickname, Tiger. She’s an animal and goes for it on the hill and in all realms of her life. "It’s important," she said, "to explore culture, balancing race time with playtime." She grew up with racing in Jackson Hole, as the daughter of Austrian Olympic multi-medalist, Pepi Stiegler. Resi knows how to live in the moment. Put the music on and enjoy the ride. “We're so lucky to travel the world,” Resi said, “and it's easy to get around (in Europe) so why not experience it?"
“There is a really tight group of girls on the team,” said teammate and photographer Lauren Ross, “because we all have a mutual respect for one another. We all have very different personalities, and we all want to win races for sure, but we all let our guards down and find humor in one another. Not taking yourself so seriously is immensely important … What people like Julia, Lindsey (Kildow), and Resi are doing for the sport is amazing. They are beautiful women who happen to rip and have personality!”
“Do you want to see my butt, you have to?!” Resi said with in-your-face enthusiasm. In honor of the two U.S. titles (her first) that she nabbed in Alaska, Resi had a celebratory drink at the Village Café in Teton Village with her MySpace (and actual) friend Lauren. When it comes to visiting with Resi, expect a story – loads of them. During the giant slalom two weeks ago, a gate whipped her in the ass on her way to the win. This was after the “Gut Bomb” (a nickname her teammates endearingly gave her for the following reason) ate salmon, halibut, venison, a box of S’mores cookies, and a hamburger to energize. “I’m an eater,” she said, matter of factly.
She is full on food, but also fully filled with generosity. Get this: She wants to someday buy her favorite redneck watering hole in Jackson, The Virginian (aka “The Virg”), so all her friends can live with her in the hotel, which has a drive-up liquor store where guys in big trucks pass through. She loves spending time in Jackson hanging out with friends, crosstraining in the mountains, and frequenting her other tavern “home” -– the Stagecoach Bar – for Disco Night on Thursdays, “I just called a bar my home,” she said. “Ummm, well it is homey.”
“Resi is just so fun to be around,” Ross said. “She always makes people laugh and exudes an amazing confidence.”
Though this Olympian used to think you had to sign up for the Olympics, she’s blowing people away with both her personality and ability on the slopes. If you see her around, say “hi” to Crazy Resi. You’ll definitely have a new best friend.
