Lots of people make pilgrimages to different places. Some people make pilgrimages for religion, others to satisfy inner callings of faith and some for lifestyle. If you are a serious skier who loves ski touring and off piste, an essential pilgrimage is the European Alps. Historically speaking, the birthplace of ski mountaineering is the Alps.
Chamonix, Verbier, La Grave, etc… the list goes on and on, from the big ones to the small hidden gems like Lindsheite, Switzerland outside of Davos. If you have ever thought of making a trip to the Alps, go now. Lifts going everywhere connecting towns, countries and mountains with huge vertical and best of all no ropes or boundaries. With this comes danger and risk but also rewards.
Depending on your experience hiring a guide may be an option. We have all seen the impact of global warming receding glaciers, lean snow years (like this one) and who knows what will happen in the future. Spring is the time to go, as it appears their winters have been starting later and later. The snow pack is at it’s deepest, the crowds are gone, the weather stabilizes with the snow and Wa-la you are good to go. In spring you can either play the corn game or find nice snow up high on pure north faces until late April, early May!
On our personal pilgrimage we climbed and skied Mt. Blanc, completed the Haute Route (Chaminox-Verbier-Zermat), the Bernese Oberland Traverse along with ski touring and hut trips in Austria. We also tried to visit many different ski areas while bumming across the Alps. Save some cash, make a dash, what Euro trash? Scratch that itch, it’s a POW rash! We were lucky to have friends to visit along the way. Everyone has heard stories, seen photos, and wondered, now it’s time to go and make your own POW Pilgrimage, Are you ready now? Go and get some euro POW…
