Freeskier Leah Evans who recently palced 3rd in the Lake Louise BMC is revved to host the inaugural Girls Day Out at Red Mountain Resort in Rossland, B.C. on March 4. “Simply this is a great opportunity,” she said. “I never had the chance to attend anything like this growing up. I aspired to be a pro skier but never had any type of outlet (photographers, media, other females) to fuel my goal. This is a great way for all girls to meet, over come age barriers and sex barriers, and get stoked on skiing. My goal for the day is that each attendee comes away with a new friend, riding buddy, phone number or e-mail address. There is going to be prizes (free stuff), female trivia competition, photographer/photo’s and most of all, a chance to learn.

This event is open to female skiers 10 years old and up who love skiing and would like to meet others just like them, competitive and non-competitive.

Evans, photographer Francoise Marseilles, Red Mountain Resort, and Cold As Ice have teamed up to sponsor the free event. They are inviting all girls interested in starting their personal ski portfolio and are in need of some professional photographs. The day will include skiing, prizes, a trivia competition, and a chance to network with other females in the ski industry.

Evans, born and raised in Rossland, dreamed of one day being Olympian Nancy Green and “then prices sky rocketed with racing,” she said. She was offered a field hockey scholarship to college, but said she knew the sport was not where her heart was and instead entered the Red Mountain Freeskiing Challenge at age18 and placed 7th. It was there that she met other girls who shared her passion for skiing.

The freeskier said she is personally psyched to offer the event because it is the beginning of her life plan. “I like to say I have plans,” she said. I know how much I love skiing and want to be in the industry, but I also want to be a well-rounded person. I try and live the life I love and I deserve. I think this is what gives you life fuel.”

“My ultimate plan,” she added, “would to have an enterprise all dictated toward females who ride. This would include a clothing brand, stores, gear (ski, surfboards, skates etc.) and venue for musical talent, sponsored competitions, and a magazine. I love to see evidence of what girls are out there doing. I have an unedifying passion for the lifestyle, friendship and natural link with nature these sports provide.”

Evans said Girls Day Out was conjured up “to push my limits and make me a better skier. I bounced [the idea] around and realized I could easily put together an event for female skiers.”

Look for more events lined up down the road. Evans hopes to expand the event elsewhere by teaming up with a presenting sponsor such as Rossignol.

“I am currently talking with Rossingol [about] making this event global so we can create strong girl communities of girls skiers everywhere. I want girls to have local role models as well as superstar role models, and these events would be a great way for everyone to be connected.”
