Last weekend Red Bull teamed up with Fritschi Diamir and Colltex to bring a new event to Red Mountain in Rossland, British Columbia. The idea of the event was to bring together 20 of the most progressive skiers like Sage, Hjorleifson and Andy Mahre together to battle it out in a competition spanning three disciplines- Uphill, Big Mountain and Slpoestyle. The weather was foggy, the Red Bull was on ice and the vibe was killer.

Day one saw all of the athletes competing in an uphill race from the old mine site on Red Mountain to the top of Mt. Roberts. Patrollers were quick to wager and offer a bottle of vodka to anyone who could make the skin in less than an hour and a half. In the end the ragun cajun Matty Richard made it in under an hour twenty and Jeremy Duchaine made it in a few minutes later.

Day two brought in heavy fog and conditions weren't conducive to finish the event in its original format. The idea was to ski a big mountain style competition on Saturday morning and then use the same venue to ski a slopestyle competition in the afternoon. Conditions were hard and visibility was a major issue thus forcing the event brass to make the call to change the event to a good ol'fashioned chinese downhill.

The long nights in Rossland made for long days but the Red Bull was flowing and the energy of the event stayed positive throughout all of the delays and decisions. In the end, Cody Townsend held a solid lead throughout the downhill event and managed to chug his beer faster than Chris Rubens to take the victory on day two. Once the beer started flowing it continued well into the night. Red Bull put on a rager at Rafters bar at the Mountain that packed two floors. Matty Richard won a $1000 bar tab for his day one win. As last call came about Matty still had $600.00 to spend and in a flurry of ordering the Rajun Cajun emptied the fridges in minutes and carried the tab to $1400.00 in what seemed to be a matter of 5 or so consecutive shots followed by endless rounds of beer.

I left the bar trying to chug open beers left over from Matty's tab as did most everyone that attended the event. The athletes were stoked on the comp and the venue. Although weather hampered the outcome it didnt dampen our spirits. The stoke is high and everyone is looking forward to seeing another Cold Rush in 2008.
