Why do we go wandering in the backcountry? The freedom, to go wherever one wants. To explore new runs and see new peaks. And the lure of fresh tracks. The chance to put your signature down on a huge piece of clean snow, with you encryption method of choice (ski, ride, tele or mono ski). The good vibes from good friends company in the mountains. This is what life is all about. I am not the only one who will confess to the lure of the Backcountry. What would your confession be?

Stash This

Click clack swoosh. Do you know this sound? It is caused by the ski binding moving. When your boot flexes up and down and the heel touches the ski. Combine this with and the sound of the skin gliding on the surface of the snow. The rhythm and flow, touch your pole, slide and glide!. The up and down. The Zig and Zag, the Frontcountry and the Backcountry.

Some people go to the gym to get a similar workout but without the views and the Pow rewards of riding down. Why do people like to go backcountry skiing? Why not just go to the local ski area and ride lifts up and ski down?? Anyone you ask has his or her own answer and “confession” to justify the lure.

Back in the day, skis were used for work and transportation before becoming a recreational sport. The oldest pair of skis ever found dates back about 4,500 years ago!! The birthplace of skiing can be found in the Scandinavian countries who first developed the Tele and Christie techniques to turn the skis. Little did the early ski pioneers know that the sport would provide so many people amazing experiences and pleasure?

From short day tours off the Resort boundary to long multi-day ski tours the time spent in the backcountry is special. From Canada to Europe and everywhere else where there are mountains and snow you will find people who are wandering and enjoying backcountry travel! From deep Pow to Slush, to Ice to Crust it’s always an adventure!! We have to take what we get but we always get out of it what we put into it.

Skiing used to be a mode of transport, which has now evolved into a test of skill and fitness, as well as burning passion to feed the soul. I must confess “I love being in the backcountry, yes I do. I love wandering in the mountains. How about you?”
