Due to the high volume of entries this year, coordinators opened additional entries spots for the event which where immediately filled.

Last season Red Mountain was the only ski hill to host a junior freeskiing event, thus this year many freeskiing teams made it a definite scheduled competition for there athletes. The growing popularity of freeskiing teams was obvious this year with teams from Schweitzer WA, Whistler, Canadian Olympic Park and the Rocky Mountains, all making the trekked to showcase there rising male and female talents.

The competition venue was underneath the Motherload chair on snow dusted Lynx line run, the ideal area for spectators, cheering parents and coaches. After all athletes had 1 qualification run, the pack was cut down into the finalist. The girls where slyly able to conclude there finals but due to fluctuating weather conditions the boys proved to not be as lucky, gusty winds closed the motherload chair for an hour making the event inaccessible. However the spirits where not damped and the atmosphere stayed upbeat (with help from DJ booth) eventually the lift re-opened and the boys charged every mound of snow insight.

Record girl entries prevailed this year as did pink outfits and colorful twin tip skis. In total six girls ages 12-14 battled it out for the title of the day, in the end it was Kerry-Anne Hamilton from Whistler took home the title of champion. For the older girls (ages 15-18) Erin Kerr also from Whistler landed herself the first place standing and a spiffy new jacket.

The boys brought pace to the event charging fast, hard and aggressive. Impressive skiing was ended early for a handful of male skier after equipment was spattered across Lynx, the mentality definitely prevailed go hard or go home. Impressive skiing was exemplified by local boy Brodie Evans who tripled dropped three cliffs on the left hand side of the venue, earning him the age 12-14 winning title. In the older category (ages 15-18) the line scores where close, but coming out on top was Whistlers Phil Hudec.

The day was an overall success and a as judge Jeff Holden explained “you guys are the future” and honestly what a bright future of clothing and skiing these kids are generating.

Actually Fernie had a junior comp last year too. 8 year olds were doing laid out back flips off 2 foot tall kickers -- the future looks ridiculous!
