On Friday the 15th of December, the lifts will start spinning for the rest of the season at Kicking Horse Resort in what will essentially be the 3rd opening day of the year. Record snow accumulations around Golden have allowed the resort to open on weekends, 13 days ahead of schedule this year, leaving locals and travelers well satisfied from thigh burning pow runs. Now the resort is set to open full-time with incredible coverage from top to bottom.
When the Horse is ‘on’ it’s a tremendous place to ski and this fall, ‘on’ doesn’t quite seem to do it justice.
“We have 1/2 our annual snowfall already and have surpassed all records for this time of year,” said marketing coordinator Mike Mcphee. “Total snowfall has totaled 478 cms so far to date and we are expecting another storm due Thursday evening”
And it's not just the Horse, the skiing in Golden in general has been exceptional this fall.
“We haven’t had a big early fall year like this since the 91-92 season” said local Golden Alpine Holidays guide Russ Lybarger. “It’s exciting to see.”
Several upgrades have been added at Kicking Horse throughout the summer including selected glading in Bowl Over, the addition of another winch cat for increased steep grooming, as well as shrub removal (summer grooming) on several runs. But the most note worthy addition is in the snow making realm. An effort is being made to ensure skiers will have a user friendly experience all the way to the bottom in the future, and so far, it’s working like a charm!
As a reminder the SnowMax card is only on sale at Mac’s stores until the 26th of December. Using up 4 days of skiing at the Horse this year doesn’t look like it should be an issue.
Hope to see you out there.
