The Canadian Avalanche Centre (CAC) is hosting the Columbia Brewery
Backcountry Avalanche Workshop (BAW) in Whistler on Saturday November 25th
and in Canmore on Sunday December 3rd. This year the BAW has down to earth
grassroots flavour. We are going out into ski towns and introducing new
tools, research, and ideas that help reduce avalanche risk. The focal point
of the day is learning about the Avaluator, a new decision making tool three
years in the making.
Presenting at the Whistler BAW are John Buffery (Buff) an experienced ACMG
snowboard guide and Greg Johnson a CAC Avalanche Forecaster. Both Buff and
Greg are excellent instructors and teach through personal experiences. At
the end of the day Buff will take you through the decision making process of
helicopter ski guiding professional skiers in the Mt. Waddington area. Sick.
In Canmore the instructors are the legendary Mountain Guide Larry Stanier
and CAC Avalanche Forecaster Ilya Storm. Both of these guys bring a wealth
of knowledge and have years and years of practical experience to help keep
you safe. Larry will take you through a number of case scenarios, including
assessing the specific hazards of ice climbing.
The CAC invites you to attend the BAW. See you there.
