While most of the northern hemisphere is gearing up to make their first turns of the season, backcountry enthusiasts in the Colorado high country have been getting after the light and deep since the first week of September. Check it out...

There's nothing like scraping off that summer wax and getting the gear ready for first day out. Nothing. There's nothing like like the first major snowfall of the season. There's nothing like dropping into your first line of the season with 2' of fresh and no other tracks in sight for miles. There's nothing like the Colorado high country early season. Nothing.

Colorado is by far the best state for early season snowfall and skiing. Bar none. Throw in the high elevation factor along with progressive storm systems and you've got yourself an early season mecca for powder turns and deep snow. This year has been off the charts to say the least. The first major snowfall dropped anywhere from 10"-20" the first weekend of September. The next storm rolled through the state and blanketed the Colorado high country with another 18" of light fluff. The next weekend brought another big storm to certain parts of the state and backcountry skiers were taking advantage of the great early season conditions by hitting lines that normally don't get skied until mid-November.

By mid October the base was bottomless and bigger lines were being skied. Life has been good here in Colorado. Being ahead of the rest is always nice, but let's hope that things keep up for the rest of the winter.
