Spending most of her time shredding the sled-accessed gnar in and around the Columbia valley, Kristin Furtney is quickly becoming one of Golden’s sickest snowboarders. I was lucky enough to catch up with her the other night. As we sat down for a beer she opened her fortune cookie left over from Chinese buffet dinner. It read “others are anxious to get to know you better”. For your chance to get to know her better, read on for the interview and check out her video.

NAME: Kristin Furtney
AGE: 23
YEARS RIDING: 5

SPONSORS:
Gauge Clothing, Divine Snowboards, Bern Helmets, Kicking Horse Mountain Resort, Darkside

WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE KIND OF RIDING?
Big mountain freeriding for sure. Maybe a bit of park in the spring too.

BUT YOU LIKE HITTING JUMPS TOO, RIGHT?
Yep! When there’s nice soft powdery landings.

WHEN AND HOW DID YOU GET INTO SLEDDING?
Last year with Karolina (Kluz). She bought the sled and I bought the truck so we could just tandem everywhere, but this year I bought my own sled, so really this year.

BEST SNOWBOARDING TRIP YOU’VE EVER BEEN ON?
Definitely the trip last year with Tim (Barker) and Ryan (Johannesen), on a whim we drove to Tahoe and Colorado. It was three of us in packed in the cab of Ryan’s truck with all our stuff and a sled in the back. 27 hours right off the bat, that was crazy......really fun trip.

HOW ARE YOU DEALING WITH OUR UNUSUALLY FAST APPROACHING END OF SEASON?
I’m frustrated. I was really hoping for a little more. Last year my last day of sledding was April 29th and the conditions then were way better than they are now.

AND WHEN YOU’RE NOT RIDING?
Finishing my electrician apprenticeship, mountain biking, and rafting.

WHO WOULD YOU SAY HAVE BEEN YOU BIGGEST INFLUENCES IN SNOWBOARDING?
Ryan has played a huge role in my snowboarding, huge, huge, huge. Chris and Tim have helped me out tons too, they’ve just spent a lot of time, you know building little jumps for me and stuff.
Also, any chick that loves skiing or snowboarding, everyone brings something new and interesting to it.

Thanks a ton to the BMCP crew for providing footage from their video. Locations include: Gorman, Quartz Creek, KHMR and KHMR backcountry and Tahoe.
