On Friday February 17th, the POWERADE Colorado Freeride Series kicked off in true form with horrendous weather and an impressive showing of athletes. The first of three events was held in the Hanging Valley Headwall. Winds gusting over 50mph added an element of difficulty, making visibility variable and the hike up to the venue a battle. However, that did not lessen the competition among the athletes one bit.
The conditions were very wind affected in the wall leaving landings incredibly firm. Some of the most impressive showings came from the male telemarkers, who tore it up stomping huge airs and incredibly technical lines. There was a lot of carnage due to difficult conditions, with two particularly bad falls. The first was from Alexis Bennett who came over the cliff band at the top of the venue with a lot of speed and lost control resulting in a fall down the entire headwall. Luckily she sustained only a knee injury. Todd Greenwood took an equally horrific fall. He caught a ski on some rocks and fell backward down a rock gully breaking his arm and a rib.
The winning line for the women came from Kate Cardamone, a ripping female telemarker who took the most technical line of the ladies and stomped a nice air at the bottom. Brian Anzni took first for the men, skiing incredibly aggresivly through some very challenging terrain to a huge air on the lookers right of two trees.
Congratulations to the winners of the first event, and good luck to all who plan to participate the second event tomorrow (Saturday), which will be held in the Burn Side Cliffs. Be sure to send some good vibes out to Todd and Alexis who we hope will have a fast recovery.
