When presented with the opportunity to conduct a culinary review on Sushi Kuma, a new sushi restaurant located at the foot of the Eagle Express gondola at KHMR, I'll have to admit I was a little nervous. After all no where on my list of credentials am I a certified connoisseur of food. So seeing as how I really like skiing I sat and pondered the relationship between skiing and sushi for a long while. In the end the only similarities I came up with is that one can enjoy really good sushi and really good skiing in the same day. And what better convenience to having a sushi bar located at the foot of the gondola so one can grab a quick Dynamite roll and load back up for another lap of freshies. Read on for the full article and a short video featuring athletes fueled by sushi charging some rowdy lines ....

While the average cafeteria grub at ski resorts consists of the usual fat laden burgers and greasy fries which can leave one feeling sluggish and weighed down it is a refreshing change to be able to have a healthy alternative such as sushi in a ski-thru like setting. On deep pow days when the hoards of shredders are out in force it can be difficult to bring oneself to stop for a replenishing meal. This is where the conveniently located Sushi Kuma and the Horsethief Cafe comes in. No less than a stones throw away from the line up to the Eagle Express Gondola one can scarf down a delicious feast of sushi and be back on the gondola feeling ready to charge the next line in a matter of minutes.

Sushi Kuma has a large list of menu items ranging from noodles to Temaki and Sashimi with prices which match those found in the bigger city sushi bars. This is another bonus for the average ski bum trying to scrounge pennies to ski another day. And of course they are fully licensed so that you can toast a bottle of saki at the end of an epic pow run.

As I mentioned I am in no way a certifiable food connoisseur, so I won't try to dazzle you with my knowledge of exotic fish and vegetables. However having spent my lunch pennies on many occasions at Sushi Kuma I will recommend my favorites. For those in a rush who want an all in one meal I'd highly recommend the Tekka Don (sliced raw tuna on sushi rice). For those with an affirmation for rolls the Dynamite Roll and Caterpillar rolls are absolutely scrumptious. For a quick bite to take up the gondy the Temaki Sushi (cones) are always a good bet. For those who aren't in a rush the atmosphere in Sushi Kuma is always pleasant as all the servers will greet you with a big hello as you walk in the door. One can sit and relax while watching people outside in the Gondola Plaza.

We decided to put a couple of athletes to the test to see how they performed following a feast at Sushi Kuma. The results were astounding as Sean Cochrane and Brendan McClean charged lines claiming they felt energized and lighter than usual. Perhaps a labeled warning may be required that 'One will be likely to huck one's meat following this meal'? Check it out....
