Calgary, Alberta – December 8, 2005 - With over 215cm (85”) of snow to date this season and 23cm in the past week, Fernie Alpine Resort is in great shape for its Saturday, December 10th opening day. With excellent early season conditions, it is expected all of Fernie’s famed bowls and major lifts will be open.
The mountain is reporting excellent conditions on the upper mountain, and snowmaking has been in full swing on the Lizard run, Mighty Moose lift and in the base area. Fernie Alpine Resort will be the place to be for opening weekend, with a number of activities, including special events, accommodation deals, sales and après ski fun taking place all over the resort.
Head to the resort plaza on Saturday for the legendary Mogul Smoker. For $10, snow enthusiasts can enjoy a Mogul Smoker cocktail, and make a snow wish and sacrifice by purchasing and offering a ski-shaped wooden plank into a community bonfire. DJ Ari will be playing during the event which will run from 3pm – 6pm opening day. Part of the proceeds will support Wildsight, a local environmental group, as well as supporting kids’ ski development through the Fernie Alpine Ski Team. Mogul Smoker cocktails can be purchased on their own and will be sold at a reduced price of $4.50 for those who bring their own mug ($5.50 regular price).
The Griz Bar will come to life for the best of après ski with the band “Life of Rhylee” playing from 3:30pm – 6:30pm on Saturday and Sunday.
Those planning to head to Fernie this weekend are still in luck: On-slope accommodations are still available, starting from $83 per room per night (taxes included). Book two nights, get the third night free. Please call the Resorts of the Canadian Rockies at 1-800-258-7669 for information and to book.
Stock up on gear at Sports Alpine, the retail shop at Fernie Alpine Resort. They are having a huge sale – all of last year’s stock will be up to 60% off, including gloves, goggles, skis, snowboards, sunglasses, and much more!
Kimberley Alpine Resort season passholders can get a head start on their winter fun. All Kimberley passholders are welcome to ski at Fernie Alpine Resort until their resort opens on December 17th.
