Four years ago, we were crusing down Whistler when we heard Michelle Rudell yell to us. She told us the day before that we should hook up with her and these two other dudes to shred for the day. We met at the top of the lift and were introduced to Dominic Melanson and Matt Richard. First run was Disease ridge, next day the Fissile. We were blown away by the agressiveness and control that these two guys showed as they slayed big terrain with speed and style. Since that time, sweet cherry Dom Dom has been doing great things Highlighted by last week's win at Fernie. The Dommer also graced this years november Powder.

Dominic is a laid back, humble skier with a good attitude. He has passion for the sport that shines through every time he's out on the mountain. The best part about Dom is that you can count on him to ski hard the whole day. 'Sweet Cherry' Melanson moved out to Whistler five years ago with two of his highschool buddies Matt 'Ragin Cajun' Richard and Kris 'Slicer' Cormier. The boys left their home mountain of Poley, NB and have spent all of their time skiing and living the true life of the ski bum. The trio spends their time shredding with Ian MacIntosh, Dana Flahr, Mikey 'Dogger' Sedivy, Shane Carmichael, Big Bird, Sara Oakden and more.
"Every time we get together with Dom he is stoked" "Not too many riders fly down the mountain as fast as 'sweet cherry'. He flows into air and sticks it fat."
Last fall, Dominic moved into the finals of Biglines.com Freeride Scholarship in what was the strongest field of competition seen to date.
The Dommer has been sponsored in part by the dish pit at the Spaghetti Factory. This perfect night shift has ensured that every day is spent out on the mountain. With no sponsors and meager rations, Dominic has managed to live the skiers dream, gradually getting better and stronger. His big mountain skills have been honed by the technical and steep terrain of Blackcomb mountain where sluff management and route-finding are all in a days work.
This year, Dom put all of his efforts into saving money to travel and compete. His first year of competing brought him first to Snowbird where he skied one of the fastest lines of the day. Dom took the experience to the local North American venues of Lake Louise where he placed 8th Fernie where he advanced to the top of the podium.
Dominic has a passion for the Mountains that is seen only in those who dedicate their lives to it. He will readily embark upon an adventure to ski a Big Line. Last spring brought Dom to the Rockies where he skied Stanley and had an amazing trip to the Catamount Icefields. His other accomplishments include a plethora of lines around Whistler and off the Duffy Lake

for some alternative accommodation that is free... if you don't mind crashing on couches that belong to random strangers... check out www.couchsurfing.com and search for jasper. there is at least one dude on the website from jasper and it's rapidly growing. also, a lot of people plug their vans into the wapiti winter campground parking lot... good money saver if you don't mind roughing it.

For what its worth, the Lobstick was by far the worst I've seen in the whole town.

[quote:ab992fbe3d="Steve"] For cheap accomodation you can always use discounts from Sunshine Marmot card books. It usually works out to about 70$ per night. That means you have more cash for lattes at Starbucks![/quote:ab992fbe3d] Thats what mtw and I did this weekend at maligne lodge. 8) [quote:ab992fbe3d="thetoad"]DON'T STAY AT THE MOUNT ROBSON INN in JASPER.[/quote:ab992fbe3d] My brother is staying at robson this week. I would rather be there then in the city right now. :(

If you'd like one of the less expensive options you can try The Astoria. The rooms aren't very big, but they're decent...and you're right there for the Dead Dog... (I've also heard good things about the Sawridge...)

[quote:ed524df826="Drewski"]I recomend the Sawridge hotel in Jasper. $100 a night gets you a really nice room with 2 big beds and a nice breakfast buffet in the morning. I have stayed just about every place in Jasper and so far the Sawridge has been the best![/quote:ed524df826] I second the Sawridge, good bang for your buck.

I just stayed in the Maligne Lodge. The bitches at the front desk are pretty miserable there too. Wouldn't recommend it, but it was Easter and we took what we could get.

During 'Jasper in Jan' my group stayed @ www.jasperinn.com in the 2 BR loft. The entire visit was pretty sweet until check out time. We were over charged by approx $150 where several charges were confused and carried over from another room. It took 3 verifications of the final bill to arrive at the proper amount. I was about to take a calculator and walk them through what I was expecting to pay. They didn't seem to appreciate my view on the situation as I was a little scornful in my approach. Just verify your bills [u:f5aef51aad]closely[/u:f5aef51aad] before walking away.
