The final US Extreme Freeskiing Championships in Crested Butte Colorado got off to a great start in Moosehead – Pheonix Bowl with blue skies and a trace of fresh snow. A rowdy crowd armed with firecrackers, cowbells, bull horns, and lots of PBR kept everyone’s spirits high, even as the temperatures dropped and snow began to fall later in the day. After only a few weather holds, things began to clear again and the competitors were able to finish their runs. Age didn’t matter in this group, everyone from 15 to 49 was ripping hard and hucking off everything they could find. Thanks to Two Planks Productions, you can check out some of the great footage.
The women’s field had excellent skiing all around, with many Crested Butte locals showing off their skills on their home field. Many of the women chose virtually the same line through the bottom of the venue making it more boney than expected for later competitors. Wendy Fisher took first followed by Laura Ogden and Annie Owens, all of Crested Butte.
Seven men competed in the masters field (ages 40 and up) all proving that you don’t have to be in your twenties to go big, instead you can huck your age in feet. Leo Vanderbosch of Telluride took a death defying fall at the bottom of Dead End Chutes, only to stand up at the end and bow. Larry Segal of Squaw Valley won with a substantial point lead over the other competitors. Crested Butte local Mark O’Neil took second, and Scott Kennett of Ridgeway CO took third.
The men’s field was characterized by lots of hucking with or without skis. It began with Ted Davenport who set the bar high by positioning himself on top of left Rabbit Ear, giving a big wave to the crowd who went wild, then stomping it with ease. First skier, and first sick bird nomination; not bad. Devin Carrick of Ouray lost a ski in the rocks, but decided to continue with his run anyway, hucking off the biggest bottom cliff where he almost pulled off a one ski landing. The field consisted of 47 men, making the competition intense. Scattered among those 47 were some telemarkers who threw down, and gave the others a run for their money. The weather got substantially worse as the day wore on, and some competitors had to run in very low visibility. That didn’t stop telemarker Zach Marquis of Crested Butte who got a sick bird nomination by pulling a huge air at the bottom of Dead End Chutes after getting fed up with all the rocks. The winning run of the day came from Jesse Hall of Crested Butte. Gabe Robbins placed second, and third went to Alex Norton who also took home the Sick Bird award. Norton got hooked on some rocks and spun backward, but continued going switch until he popped a 180 and immediately aired a 40 foot cliff. He stomped it clean and was tackled by friends and competitors as he skied through the finish. His run was the perfect ending to a solid five days of skiing at the Sabb U.S. Extreme Freeskiing Championships.
