I am sitting in the Alta Rustler writing this, exhausted and impressed from a rad day of skiing at Snowbird and Alta. My tired legs and the sick video I am watching can attest to the fact that day two of the US Freeskiing Nationals lived up to expectations and then some. In hard pack conditions on a venue that had been schralped to say the least, everyone was charging. Lines that looked unlikely on a pow day went down in less than stellar conditions, much to the pleasure of a huge crowd and the judges.

Once again the ladies got things started, heading up Silverfox at 9:00 A.M. Under a bluebird sky, perennial favorite Kit DesLauries skied a super solid line and got the crowd going, coming into the crowd with the second highest score of the day. Kit was followed by Amy Holland who left the snow in Tahoe to come out to Snowbird for the comp. Amy showed that she doesn’t need the pow to shred, scoring a solid 23.6 for third. Representing Colorado, Asia Jenkins threw down the line of the day for the women, laying down rails in between solid drops.

For the men, the day would belong to the Frenchies, stealing four of the top five spots. Last years second place finisher Manuel Gaidet skied an unbelievable line to score 31.4, dropping improbable airs and shredding with a style that is all his own. In second, Aurelien Ducroz killed it as well, stomping everything with style. The lone American in the top three was Jack Hannan. His rocky Crested Butte stomping grounds served him well today and he skied like the pro that he is, linking strong turns and taking a technical line that stoked everybody. Canucks Matt Richard. Dana Flahr, Leif Zapf-Gilje, Ian Macintosh, Justin Modroo and James Heim all killed it as well. Local favorite Ben Wheeler finished in a strong sixth place while a seemingly strong acrobatic line from Cody Barnhill failed to move him forward.

After the venue was wrapped up for the day, shredders made their way down to the Tram Club for the Powder Video awards. The who’s who crowd was ready to celebrate a day of amazing skiing on the venue and freeskiing in fun conditions at both Snowbird and Alta. The beer came early and often, and the energy was tangible when Biglines presented Bulletins from a Colder Planet and the 2004 comp footage. Hooting and hollering just got people more stoked for the next day.
Tomorrow’s finals move back to North Baldy, with more sun and warm temperatures in the forecast.
