Name: Mike Berard
Age: 26
Where are you from: Vancouver Island
Where do you Ski: FERNIE!!!!!!!!!!!!!
How have you dedicated your life to the mountains and adventure?
My dedication to adventure and to the mountains is integral in everything I do. I've chosen to follow my passion for the arts(ski/snowboard photography/writing) instead of a wealthier, more secure career elsewhere. I want to capture the emotions and the lifestyles of skier /snowboarders on film and share it with everyone who appreciates all that nature has given us. We are so lucky to live in such a beautiful place and I see no other choice than to dedicate my life to enjoying the pleasures of this earth. It's a healthy hedonism!
Why have you dedicated your life to mountain pursuits?
It's what I love to do. I have a hard time understanding why others concern themselves so much with money and career choices that, ultimately, make them miserable. There is so much more to life and the older I get the more I realize that material goods and money are so unimportant when compared to family, friends and positive life experiences. To me, there is nothing more positive than a good time in
the outdoors with family and friends. Whether it's skiing, hiking, mtb or just sitting around the campfire playing music, being outside connects us to nature, something many of the human race have forgotten about completely.
What are some things the mountains have taught you that have proven valuable in the real world?
When I spend time in the outdoors, I am reminded of how we are just a small piece of the puzzle. In our western society, it is easy to start to think that the earth is here to serve us, that nature is just a support system for the greedy, insatiable human race. Once you start spending considerable amounts of time in the outdoors you start to realize that we are working against the system when we should be working with it. I think that once you realize that, you start to learn how to deal with conflicts and life situations with more insight.
