Kevin Hjertaas and I discuss on an attempt of the north face of Commonwealth peak. A narrow chute flows thru the middle of its steep, rocky face. Three major crux’s have prevented its success. No turns of my knowledge have ever been set from the summit on its north face

It’s 4:30am when Kevin wakes me and I start to prepare on the days adventure. I pack my bag and then repack it eliminating as much weight as possible. The more weight I carry the slower I will travel and the more fatigued I will be. I dial out my gear and head upstairs. Kevin has a fresh cup of coffee waiting for me. We look at the weather, realize the temperature has not fallen below freezing as forecasted and convince each other that we won’t know until were there, whether we will be able to summit this face.
40 minutes of driving later, dawn slowly makes its way over the mountains and running water becomes visible on high elevations on the rocks surface. We laugh at our positive mental attitude believing if we wanted it we could have it. We were wrong the mountain would not welcome us today.
We turn the car around and head back down to town with thoughts of a few extra hours of sleep in our heads.
