Mother Nature finally provided a window of opportunity to us for finals of the World Freeskiing Tour of 2004. Temps into the mid 50’s and partial sun throughout the day warmed the snow into soft sun-cup conditions which every competitor felt more comfortable riding. The venue ‘THE CIRQUE’ which up until this competition, is closed to the public, gave ample amounts of terrain to the competitors.
Dana Flair of Whistler opened up the competition earning the first SickBird Award of the day as well as skiing an effortless run airing out a nice 15 footer to start his run and moved quickly and efficiently through the course.
Craig Garbiel of Kirkwood also earned a Sickbird nomination, flying down the course with a few solid 15 footers and overall maintaining good fluidity.
Shane Carmichael of Whistler was the first to cleanly drop the center chute; which with a mandatory air at the bottom claimed quite a few skiers. One skier of which it claimed was Tyler Knowles who aggressively tried to take a 10 foot drop to straight-line off the mandatory air but unfortunately he was unable to land the final air and after a nice ‘tomahawk’ (see multiple flips in succession) he put his skis back on and put on a well received finishing show for everyone
Cliff Bennett skied one of the fastest lines of the day earning a 35.4 and a Sickbird nomination with a smooth technical line and a solid air at the bottom.
The Sickbird Award went to Whistler local Mike Stevenson who before the run had told the announcers that,“he had something big planned for the start.” After a few turns at the top Stevenson threw the largest backflip of the comp off a 30 foot cliff landing a good 40 feet down the start of the course. Remind you that it was spring conditions and still pretty firm snow. Hands down the craziest move pulled during the competition Stevenson stomped the landing and would’ve walked away with the best score of the day had he not sketched out on the lower section of the course through a narrow chute.
The French came out in full force again with Aurelien Ducroz holding a fast creative line with small solid airs to take the overall title of the day. Manu Gaidet also skied strong grabbing a fifth place finish overall.
Ian McIntosh of Panorama took second overall with a 2nd run that effortlessly sent the tight mandatory air chute that Carmichael had first cleaned.
Dark horse skier Brady Smedsrund of Red Lodge took the final podium spot with a smooth fast run that didn’t quite have the tenacity of the prior run the day before. Although for his first competition I’m sure we’ll see more of him in the future.
