On the airplane: I sit and sit for four days. When I start to feel grumpy, I think of friends who pay a lot of money to sit in a cramped position in a Zen temple for four days without
talking. We each have our ways and our own personal temples. Right now, mine is Aeroflot seat 26C. I sit without talking (or at least without saying anything intelligent).
I try to elevate my consciousness but slip groggily into watching Johnny Depp, in Pirates of the Caribbean, in Russian, for the third time. In any case, I’ve paid a lot of money to end up ¾ of the way around the world, which is sort of like going ¼ of the way around the world – with a little inefficiency tossed in for good
luck. Welcome to the madness of Mother Russia.
OK, I’m here, we fly north on Friday and start trudging and sailing into the vast Siberian tundra.
