Visibility was less than ideal but the competition remained fierce at Whitewater’s 24th Annual Telemark Cup. All 32 contestants charged the technical course despite flat light and a low cloud cover. No one complained about conditions since the snow had been falling all weekend and the course was groomed and packed powder throughout. Larger than intended air was a give-in due to sketchy visibility and was followed immediately by the technical uphill through the trees. A healthy dose of up and down in the course to prove the versatility of a teleskier.

The course was fast and the fastest time of the day was by Nelson local, Simon Lintz, in the Men’s Open. Simon’s time was 1 min 1 sec!, and his ticket to a third consecutive year of glory turns into the winner’s circle. Lucinda Taylor teleturned her way to first in the Women’s Open with a speedy time of 1 min 34 secs! The Men’s and Women’s Novice classes had double the entries and both oldschoolers and first timers. The Women’s first place was snagged by Alicia Brooks in 1 min 42 secs, and the Men’s first went to Justin Heinin in 1 min 20 secs. Everyone’s efforts were all well rewarded with prizes like Patagonia fleeces and Smith Shades, all provided by Snowpack.

Our friends from down south also joined in on the tele weekend, visitors from Arizona, Colorado and Wyoming came to Whitewater for Nils Larson’s three day tele clinic (www.freeheels.com). Two days of honing their skills on the hard packed and off to the Kootenay Pass for a day of touring and a little more “Beyond the Groom”.

Sunday was a day devoted to freeheelers, and they all came out of the woodwork for this annual event. The course was well set up thanks to the Whitewater crew (www.skiwhitewater.com) and the race is friendly and open to all abilitites. Congrats to Becky Swan who had only teleskiied one day prior to entering the race, and still only came in a mere 13 seconds behind the leader of her class. Impressive teleskiing and charging through the course by all the competitors, it was enough to make anyone want to give freeheelin’ a go.
