Fate has brought me to heaven this year in the form of the Kootenays. Nelson, B.C. is swimming in snow from last weeks' double whammy of systems that rolled through leaving a grand tally of 130 cms. Tuesday and wednesday (the 27th and 28th) were classic days to call in sick and burn up to Whitewater to join the frenzy of pow hounds shredding waist deep pow straight off the lifts.
Whitewater may seem small through the eyes of a resort junkie, but it's endless through the eyes of a touring enthusiast. The number of avid backcountry skiers is high here, and rightfully so as the surrounding areas are so quickly accessible. Always a friendly environment, Whitewater completely supports the backcountry scene and hopes to increase awareness by providing Avalanche Awareness courses twice a month throught the season. Also available is the One-Up pass for $12. The One-Up gets you one glory ride up either lift, both only fifteen minutes away from a ton of ski touring options.
Whitewater has a ton of showboating skiier and boarders out there, but the real talent is in the telemarkers. Tele-skiers seem to flock to Nelson from all areas, and with them they bring some mad skills.
The freeheelers around here make telemarking look easy and graceful like it should be, and they're unstoppable in the backcountry. Whitewater will be hosting their 24th Annual Telmark Cup on Feb 15. This is a GS / Dual Slalom Race, most likely being held on the Joker line off of Summit Chair. Costumes are welcome and encouraged, the entry fee is $30.00 and the prizes are provided by Snowpack. Also on this telecrazed weekend, Nils Larson will be running a tele clinic, and spaces are very limited, please call Whitewater at (250)354-4944 for more details.
Other events and details to come are the Season's Passholders Race on March 7th, the Motocross Race on March 20th/21st, the Beach Party Weekend on the 27th/28th, and the Summit to Summit Multi Sport Event on April 4th.
Thanks and Enjoy,
Lisa Kelly
