Mt. Northstar is beautiful glaciated peak and the highest one on a huge icefield out by Invermere and Radium British Columbia. The climb up can be as fun as the ski down, and the turns are incredible. We've only skied the main lines, but there are some wild options if you catch it in good conditions.
Rating: **/***
FD: ?
Height: tops out around 10,000 ft
Access: Radium and up Horse thief creek to the Forester Creek logging road, South East British Columbia. Olive Hut
Characteristics: year round glacier ice/snow
Best time: steep season in the Canadian Rockies – late Winter, Spring, late Summer, Fall.
The Run:
This peak allows you to climb a line along the ridge, and minimize your exposure on the way to the summit. You can strap in almost on the summit of the highest peak on the icefiels, it's a pretty great place. It starts with a steep face, which leads down into a large bowl. If your not sure of stability, hug the climbing line until you have convinced your self either way. In optimal conditions, you can ski the large bowl straight down to the ice tongue. It's a great run, be careful near the bottom of the bowl to the top of the tonque, the glacier has some big holes in it. If you have sketchy conditions, just ski the climbing line, it's fairly protected.
For the more adventurous of you who just happen to be there in optimal conditions, there are some tasty options to skiers left. Just looks like some nice options, I've never skied them so I can't say for sure.
Have fun and play safe!
Time: multi-day trip
Objective Hazards:
There are a few major aspects to be careful of on this peak:
• Crevasses, there are a lot of them, all over the descent, keep an eye out for them.
• Snow stability is a concern on this peak, know da snow! Your skiing down a big bowl
• It's pretty remote, so don't go getting hurt.
