The postcard gully is one of the most photographed mountains in Banff,
Just look straight down Banff Ave to the summit of cascade. The route follows the
summit ridge down to the notch between the false summit and the peak. The line follows a series of couloirs straight towards town till you hit the end of snow.
FD: ?
Height: tops out over 10,000 ft, 5000 foot max run till you run out of snow
Access: old buffalo paddock parking lot, between the Norquay road and
Minniwanka turnoff , Banff, National Park, Ab, Canada
Characteristics: Big peak, no approach /snow couloirs
Best time: steep season in the Canadian Rockies - Spring . Do not go in
there if the nights are not freezing, some rock fall, but need freezing
temps, early start, and snow in all the gullies
The Run: Link the summit ridge to the false summit (1000 ft) , then pick
and chose your way down the gullies where the snow looks nice, All
will lead down to the main funnel, some have a few unskiable cliffs in
them. The pitch is mostly around 35-40 degrees with parts up to 45. The bottom
mellows a bunch and is a junk yard of junk avi snow.
Time: day trip
Objective Hazards:
There are 2 major aspects to be careful of on this line:
. You have to climb your line, so you have to be positive of the snowpack
stability. You can't just cut the cornice to test the slope, you test it on
your way up, and if your wrong, the consequences are high.
. Some line choices are avail, but for the most part just follow your tracks
back down.
. Rockfall, if it's warm - you shouldn't be there. It get's early morning
sun, and this peak is just frozen together. When the ice melts, the peak
crumbles.
