Another Wapta Classic, in the right conditions the east ridge of St. Nic is a fun, steep, exposed line from a summit, and one of the most aesthetic descents on the icefield. St. Nic is the prominent peak rising above the Bow Glacier and Bow Hut. After bagging this baby, you’ll never go to the Wapta again without a huge smile on your face.
Quality Rating: **1/2/ ***
FD: ?
Height:
Characteristics: Above the Wapta Icefields, mostly year round snow/ice, but the Ridge melts out some summers
Best time: probably the spring, we skied it in the fall, but the year before was a big year, and lot’s of snow stayed the summer, this year it was dry in the fall.
The Run: The run is a 1000 - 1200 ft super exposed ridge probably around 50+ degrees in places with a small mandatory drop near the bottom. The majority of the run is skied 25 feet from a 1500 foot cliff on skiers left.
Time: could be done in a day, but it’s recommended to take a few days and enjoy the icefields.
Objective Hazards:
There are 2 major things to be aware of on this line:
• The 1500 foot cliff to your immediate left is of primary concern, loss of control or a fall could easily be fatal. There are no ledges or benches or anything that will slow you down
• If your skiing it in the fall, make sure the snow is solid, it’s not permanent ice.
Access:
There are 2 ways to access this line:
• Climb St Nicolas’s South ridge to the summit and drop in
• Climb the line, the east ridge
Trip Reports:
We skied it in the fall, there was tones of sluff coming off the big cliff, and a small drop we to climb up and get down. In the spring, it might be filled in? This trip was with Yannis Karlos, Kevin Hjertaas, Colin Garratt and Brandon Peterson
