Road Trippin' New Zealand Part 5: Snowpark

Snowpark is about a half hour drive from Wanaka on New Zealands South Island, directly accross the valley from Cardrona. A few years back, don't ask me how many, someone decided to create the perfect terrain park playground for Kiwis and all the northern hemisphere riders with nowhere to rip in their summer. Now you would be hard pressed to pick up any snow sports publication that doesn't have a photo in it from Snowpark.

The entire hill is a terrain park, as is implied by the name, so no resources are wasted opening bunny runs or bombing for avies. Not that there would be any. Although the hill caters almost exclusively to high end park riders, there are also a number of more begginer and intermediate features for you to warm up or hone your skills on. Don't expect to be able to link more than 3 big turns on the whole hill without getting airborne. If you are not into park riding, this is not the place for you. If you are, the photos should speak for themselves.

Snowpark features a massive superpipe, and a main line with 3 huge booters, 2 rail features and a double-gappy-step-down-thingy. Other noteables include the huge quarterpipe, neighboring step-up and 2 rail lines. Also under works while I was there was an absolutely massive super jump (in the background of the pic below), and another halfpipe. Plenty to keep you occupied all season, as long as you manage not to hurt yourself. Passes run $66 for an adult full day, with plenty of multi-day discounted options.
