“It’s never an easy task,” admits Powder Editor, Derek Taylor. “This year was no exception, but that’s a real testament to the quality of the filmmaking and the undeniable skill of the athletes. If it were easy, it wouldn’t be worth doing.”  Topics of particular contention this year were the nominees for “Best Male” and “Full Throttle.” For a behind-the-scenes look at how these decisions got made click here, but be forewarned that it didn’t happen without a few insults, some mockery and unabashed grandstanding.

Regardless of the means however, the nominees have been selected. Of the two dozen films considered, the nominees for the coveted “Movie of the Year” award are: In Deep by MSP Films, Everyday is a Saturday by Poor Boyz Productions, Refresh by Level 1 Productions, Wild Stallions by Meathead Films and Re:Session by Teton Gravity Research.

T’S A WRAP: THE 10TH ANNIVERSARY POWDER VIDEO AWARDS & READER POLL PRESENTED BY VERIZON WIRELESS AND SAMSUNG

Inaugural “Lifetime Achievement Award” Goes to Warren Miller; MSP takes “Movie of the Year” for In Deep

DANA POINT, Calif.  (Jan. 31, 2010) — Music blaring, crowd roaring, insane footage from the year’s best ski movies rolling, and all of the ski industry’s high-rollers packed under one roof in a little town they call Aspen…what else could it be, but the 2010 Powder Video Awards (PVA) & Reader Poll presented by Verizon Wireless and Samsung?

The highlight of the evening was the induction of the “Lifetime Achievement Award,” which went to the legendary Warren Miller. He flew in from Montana for the show tonight despite a broken back. “I’m 85, that’s a long trip on a pair a skis,” says Miller before encouraging all the skiers in the room to “hitch up their pants” and spend their careers chasing the insane standard set by Shane McConkey. “Make a lot of turns and enjoy every moment of it…just don’t cross your tips!”

Much of the innovation that Powder celebrated tonight wouldn’t have been possible without the foundation laid by those who have come before us. As recognized tonight by winning filmers and athletes alike.

Coming full circle tonight was 2009 “Breakthrough Performer,” Sean Pettit who took home the prize tonight for both “Best Male” and “Full Throttle” for his performance in In Deep by MSP. As if that wasn’t honors enough, Tanner Hall proclaimed “[Sean Pettit] is a real skier...he’s the future. I am so proud of you Sean. You literally are the best skier in the world.”

Lynsey Dyer broke in snagging the award for “Best Female” for her performance in Magic Moments by Stormshow Studios. “Wow, this is awesome!” said Dyer.  “I finally got one of these!” As co-founder for SheJumps, a non-profit group working to increase the participation of women in outdoor activities, Dyer threw props to all the women shredding right now. “Cheers to all you girls that rip.”

The most coveted honor of the night went to MSP for In Deep, making it their fifth “Movie of the Year Award” win in PVA history. Full Video Awards and Reader Poll results are available at http://www.powderawards.com/results/.

The reigning darlings of Reader Polls past have done it again. Seth Morrison and Ingrid Backstrom took the number one male and female spots in the tonight’s Reader Poll for the fourth consecutive year in a row.

Special thanks to the sponsors of the 2010 Powder Video Awards and Reader Poll: Verizon Wireless and Samsung who gave both “Best Male” and “Best Female” performance winners an Omnia II cell phone and a year’s complimentary Verizon Wireless services. Additional, thanks to our other sponsors Aspen Skiing Company, General Snus, and Red Bull Skiing. Without their support, the event would not be what it is today.
